Force System

Force System

Force System – is any arrangement

where two or more forces act on a
body/particle.
Force System

Types of Force System

Coplanar (2D) Spatial (3D)
• Concurrent • Concurrent
• Non-concurrent • Non-concurrent
• Collinear • Parallel
• Parallel
• LIKE
• UNLIKE
Force System
Coplanar (2D)
• Concurrent force system
B
The forces when extended pass
A o
through a single point and the
point is called point of
concurrency.

Force System
Coplanar (2D)
• Non- concurrent force system
B
A
When the forces of a system do
not meet at a common point of
concurrency.
C
Force System
Coplanar (2D)
• Collinear force system

When the lines of action of all

forces act along the same line

A B C
Force System
Coplanar (2D)
• Parallel force system (like)

When the lines of action of all C

A
forces is same but does not lie B
in the same line
Force System
Coplanar (2D)
• Parallel force system (unlike)

When the lines of action of all C

A
forces is parallel but different B
in direction.
Force System
Principle of Transmissibility
The point of application of a
force can be moved anywhere
along its line of action without
changing the external reaction
forces on a rigid body

long x-axis.

Fy – vector component of F a
long y-axis.

Determining the component of a
force
Force System
Example 1
Determine the x and y scalar
component of each of the three
forces.
Force System
Example 2
Determine the resultant and
direction acting in the structure
with respect to x- axis.
Force System
Example 3
a. Write F in terms of unit vectors
i and j.
b. Determine the scalar
components along x’ and y’ axis.
c. Determine the scalar
component along x and y’ axis.

Example 4
a. Determine the component of
resultant along b-axis.
