• Produced through strong interaction
• Decay through weak interaction (Kaons)
• Always produced in pairs
• Quantum number conserved (similar to charge, baryon number etc)

• Pions are the exchange particle for the
strong nuclear force
• Contain a strange quark, and so have a
strangeness number
