Use the comparative form of an
adjective + than to compare two
people, places, or things.
For example: Clothes in the
Adidas store are more expensive
than in ONLY
Depending on the adjective we
can form the comparative in
different ways.
SPELLING RULES
Short adjectives
For shortest (one-syllable) adjectives, add –er to the
adjective.

Calm = Calmer
Small = Smaller

My boss is calmer, THAN your boss .

If a one syllable adjective ends in vowel letter followed by a
consonant letter, the consonant letter is doubled.

e.g.: Big → Bigger

If an adjective ends in -e, just add -r

e.g.: wide → wider

If an adjective ends in a consonant followed by -y, -y


is replaced by -i when adding –er

e.g.: angry → angrier.

Two syllable adjectives which end in -y or –r usually


form the comparative by adding -er and changing the -y
for an –i.
e.g.:
Pretty = Prettier
Clever= Cleverer

Two syllable adjectives or more syllables form the comparative with


more – less* and the adjective.

e.g.:
Ambitious = More ambitious – Less ambitious
Determined = More determined – Less determined

Ana is more ambitious THAN Peter.


The new manager is less determined THAN Jack.

“less”.
