SEQUENCE AND SERIES
We encounter sequences at the very
beginning of our mathematical
experience. The list of even numbers
2, 4, 6, 8, 10, . . . and the list of odd
numbers 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, . . . are examples.
We can predict what the 20th term of
each sequence will be just by using
common sense.
FIBONACCI SEQUENCE
1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, . . .
In which each term is the sum of the
two preceding terms; for example,
55= 21+34.
In this case it is somewhat more
difficult to predict the 20th term,
without listing all the previous ones.
ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE

where each term is obtained from


the preceding one by adding a constant
called the common difference and
often represented by the symbol d.

Suppose we have the arithmetic
sequence of -3, -10, -17, -24, -31, -38…
Find the 50th term and 100th term of
the sequence

Operating formula: = a + (n-1) d

Let d= -7; a=-3

GEOMETRIC SEQUENCE
 
A geometric sequence has the form
a, ar, a, a, . . . in which each term is
obtained from the preceding one by
multiplying by a constant, called the
common ratio and often represented
by the symbol r .
The terms in a geometric sequence with
negative r will oscillate between positive
and negative.

The doubling sequence 1, 2, 4, 8, 16. . . is


an example of a geometric sequence
with first term 1 and common ratio r = 2.

Operating Formula:

Let common ratio be 2 since when 8 is


divided by 4 and when 32 is divided
by 16, the answer will be 2.

and Series

If you were given Php50 on the first


day of school, Php55 for the second
day and additional Php5 daily, how
much money will you be able to save
by the end of 2 weeks?
First, Translate the problem into a
sequence

50, 55, 60…

Whereas, the common difference is 5.


Then in 2 weeks there will be 14 days.
 
Second, find the 14th day value

The 14th term is 115.


 
Lastly, find the sum of the sequence

You visit the Grand Canyon and drop a
rock off the edge of a cliff. The distance
the rock will fall is 16 feet the first second,
48 feet the next second, 80 feet the third
second, and so on in an arithmetic
sequence. What is the total distance the
object will fall in 6 seconds?
First, Translate the problem into a
sequence

16, 48, 80…

Whereas, the common difference is 32.


 
Second, find the 6th sequence

The 6th term is 176.


 
Lastly, find the sum of the sequence
