Position Paper
Position Paper
• a written report outlining
someone's attitude or intentions
regarding a particular matter.
• is based on the facts that provide
a solid foundation of argument.
Persuasion

• Persuasion is an umbrella term of

influence. Persuasion can
attempt to influence a person's
beliefs, attitudes, intentions,
motivations, or behaviors.
How to Build a Position
• EXPLORE. Read widely about the
topic. It is not enough to rely on your
common sense or personal experience.
In order to succeed in building a
position, you must read what other
people have written about it first.
How to Build a Position
• BRAINSTORM. After gathering all
the positions and evidences you
need, brainstorm with a friend
about the ideas that you have
found.
How to Build a Position
• CREATE ASSERTIONS. Assertions are opinions that
people may or may not agree with. They are not
general truths; instead, they are positions on an
issue. Several assertions should be written down.
After reading one’s assertions, one should evaluate
whether all of these assertions fit a particular
theme or idea. This theme or idea should be the
controlling idea of your position paper.
How to Build a Position
• GATHER THE EVIDENCE. Assertions are only as
good as the quality of one’s evidence. After
writing one’s assertions, one must gather the
evidence to prove each point. Evidence could be
any of the following: facts; statistics; interviews
with experts; and perceived philosophical, socio-
political, or psychological truths.
How to Build a Position
• HAVE CREDIBLE SOURCES. The best sources are
bills, laws, and declarations from government
and international non-government
organizations. One may also use scholarly
articles from academic journals; books; articles
from reputable newspapers, magazines,
television stations, news media sources; and
entries from encyclopedias or dictionaries.
How to Build a Position
• REFINE THE ARGUMENT. An argument is made of
three elements: assertion, evidence, and
explanation. Further explanation is needed such as
the clarification between the link of the assertion
and the evidence, the use of further examples and
situations, and the explanation and contextualization
of the evidence and its importance.
How to Build a Position
• PREPARE FOR THE OPPOSITION. A position
will always have a negation of that same
position. This is called the opposition.
When doing your research, it is important
to read what the opposition has to say in
order to refute them in your position
paper.
How to Build a Position
• WRITE THE POSITION PAPER. Catch your readers’
attention. Enumerate each of your arguments and
write them in the most persuasive way possible.
Emulate styles of writing or find your own. Refute
the oppositions, but prioritize building strong
arguments. Do not merely reiterate the main
points in your conclusion. Rather, end with strong
insights, a recommendation or a call to action, or
even an emotional appeal.

Today, most of the energy resources people have are generated from coal, oil, and natural gas.
However, these resources are limited. If continuously consumed at an alarming rate, fossil
fuels necessary for generating power to operate vehicles and factories will run out before
long. Nonetheless, this problem can be resolved through the use of alternative sources of
energy and conservation efforts. First, using alternative sources of energy such as solar energy
and fusion energy would lessen pollution. These alternatives are actually more accessible and
cost – efficient. Second, solution that governments can adopt is the enhancement of
conservation efforts. To do this, governments need to make the public more aware of the
benefits of conservation, as well as of conserving energy, such as recycling. Laws can also be
passed to mandate the public and all stakeholders to recycle energy.
