Review of Literature
Speech Acts Theories
In the review of literature in this proposal, the researcher
explains a theoretical basis of speech acts only from the
first 2 figures, they are Austin and Searle.

Actually The original theory of speech acts is J.L Austin. And he

divides the speech act theory into three parts including:
Locutionary act – Illocutionary act – Perlocutionary act

Searle categorizes illocutionary acts into five types which

are (assertive or representative, directive, commissive,
expressive, and declarative).
Review of Literature
The researcher choose to use the speech act theory
from Searle to analyze the data. This is because
Searle’s theory is more supportive of the research
proposed by researcher.

Austin's speech act theory is a speech act theory based on the

speaker, where the focus of attention is on how the speaker
realizes his/her intention in speaking. On the other hand,
Searle sees speech acts based on the listener, which is how the
listener responds to the utterance, and how he estimates the
purpose of the speaker's use of certain utterances.
