AUTHOR – MICHAEL MORPURGO

Early Life:

• Michael is an author, poet, playwright and librettist. He is one of

Britain's best-loved writers for children.
• Born on 5th October 1943.
• His father was away at the war, in Baghdad when he was born.
• He was sent off to boarding school at the age of 7years.
• He loved rugby and singing.
• After graduation he had a short career in teaching.
• He then married eldest daughter of the founder of Penguin Books, in
1963.
• He set up “Farms for City Children” charity with his wife Clare in 1976
after leaving his job as a teacher that he held for ten years.

Michael Morpurgo-
Inspiration and Career:

• While working as a teacher he discovered his love for writing.

• He was inspired by famous writers and their works like – Ted Huges’
Poetry in the Making, Paul Gallico’s The Snow Goose and Ernest
Hemingway’s The Old Man and The Sea.
• Hughes and Rafferty were influential in his career, with Hughes
becoming a friend, mentor and neighbour.
• He credits Hughes and Rafferty with giving him the confidence to
write War Horse, his most successful work to date.
• His work is noted for its "magical storytelling", for recurring themes
such as the triumph of an outsider or survival, characters' relationship
with nature, and for vivid settings such as the World War I.

Inspiration and Career:

• Few of his best children’s novels include War Horse, Private Peaceful, The
Butterfly Lion and The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips.
• Many of his books have been adapted into TV, films and plays. Film
versions have been made of Friend or Foe, Private Peaceful, and Why the
Whales Came – which was also adapted to a stage play. 
• War Horse, one of Michael’s best selling novels, has been adapted as a
radio broadcast and stage play. It was also adapted into a 2011 British film
‘War Horse’, directed by the world-famous director Steven Spielberg.
• Morpurgo became the third Children's Laureate, from 2003 to 2005.
• He was awarded an OBE (Order Of British Empire) in 2007 and a
Knighthood in the New Year’s Honours in 2018 for services to literature
and charity.
