Original Objectives

Presenting UK Telecommunications Industry to ITU-D as a united provider


following the outcomes of the Buenos Aries Action Plan and OFTEL Duopoly
Review in 1994.
In 1995 BT, C&W, Nortel, GPT and Motorola all had substantial technical
training capabilities.
What have we done?

Hosted 5 major events for the ITU including Global HRD Symposium at
Coventry in 1999, 2001, 2003 and 2008
Developed Masters Degrees in Telecommunications Law, Engineering and
Management
Educated 12 Associate Professors from China
Co-sponsored 4 PhD students to study at Cambridge University
Sponsored Tanzanian lecturer to study PhD at Coventry & OUT

Founding members BT and C&W are still active and Cambridge University
has been awarded an Honorary Directorship

What are we doing?

Transferring knowledge to Africa through Kigali Institute of Science and


Technology in Rwanda. Delivering blended learning via Open University of
Tanzania.
Transferring knowledge to China through Beijing University of Posts and
Telecommunications (China’s number one ICT institution), South West
University for Nationalities and North University for Ethnic Minorities
Annual lectures on European Regulation to USTTI
What have we developed?

A Master of Laws in Information Technology and Telecommunications Law


An MSc in Operational Communications
A Master of Communications Management
A Master of Telecommunications Regulation and Policy
MBA modules
How are we delivering Management Degrees?

In conjunction with Coventry University we have delivered the MCM (Master
of Communications Management) for over five years:
- as a taught one year programme
- as a two and a half year on-line option
In conjunction with KIST: (Kigali Institute of Science & Technology)
- as a taught one year programme but using UKTA Professors to deliver all
content
What are we delivering in Rwanda?

Using a team of UKTA Professors we are delivering at KIST an 8 module, 15


credit per module Master of Communications Management covering:
Environment
Project Management and Risk Analysis
The Legal & Regulatory Requirements of ICT’s
Creating Business Advantage & Strategic Management
Economics & Marketing
Change & Virtual Organisations
Contracting Management
HRD/HRM

- plus a 20,000 word Thesis


What are we planning in Rwanda?

Using a team of UK Professors, UKTA will be delivering in 2010 an 8 module,


15 credit per module MSc in Operational Communications covering:
Environment
Project Management and Risk Analysis
The Legal & Regulatory Requirements of ICT’s
Network Architecture
Economics & Marketing
Wireless Access to ICT
Contracting Management
Service Level Management of HR & Technology

- plus a 20,000 word Thesis


How are we delivering Law Degrees?

In conjunction with the Law School of the University of Strathclyde we

deliver the LLM in IT & Telecommunications Law


- in the classroom as a one year taught programme
- on-line as a two year distance learning option
How will we deliver the eLLM and eMCM?

LLM in IT & Telecomms – In conjunction with Professor Lloyd and other


Law Professors UKTA launches today 2nd February, in Morogoro, Tanzania a
blended learning Master of Laws accredited by OUT covering,
Telecomms Regulation & Policy
Intellectual Property
Contract & eCommerce Law
Data Security
Master of Communications Management - In conjunction with UKTA
Professors & Open University of Tanzania (OUT) we will develop in 2010 a
blended learning MCM
What are the UKTA Costs?

We employ no staff and our costs are limited to


- Outsourced Secretariat
- Company Secretary and Chairman’s travel
- Accountant
Meetings hosted by members with lunch and coffee provided FOC
What does UKTA offer?

A close collaboration with the development of many of the World’s Operators


and Regulators
Sector Membership of both ITU-D and ITU-T
Global and national exposure of individual partnership opportunities with the
ICT industry through the UKTA and ITU
Opportunity to co-sponsor Masters students
What are the opportunities?

UKTA believes that with a network of relevant Associates we can truly


promote a UK message to international communities
A small contribution from relevant organisations allows our volunteers to
actively promote the UKTA
Scholarship Support of £201,000 raised for 2007-08 Academic Year
