MADE PERFECT

THROUGH SUFFERINGS
HEBREW 2:9-13
But we see him who for a little while was made lower than

the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and

honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace
of God he might taste death for everyone.10 For it was fitting
that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing
many sons to glory, should make the founder of their
salvation perfect through suffering.
HEBREW 2:9-13

For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have

11

one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call

them brothers,12 saying, “I will tell of your name to my
brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your
praise.” 13 And again, “I will put my trust in him.”
And again, “Behold, I and the children God has given me.”
Jesus was made lower than the angels

But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels,

namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of

death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

 He became man in nature (physical body)

 To suffer death on our behalf
 The promise of dominion could only be fulfilled through humility,
suffering, and death of Jesus.
Jesus is crowned with glory and honor

But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels,

namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of

death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

 Jesus perfectly showed God’s love and grace

 To proclaim that His death is for everyone
Jesus Tasted Death For Everyone
But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels,

namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of

death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

 Jesus has now passed through weakness and death, and is crowned
with glory and honor.
 Jesus is the great forerunner of our salvation
 Jesus defeated death and restored the hope of Psalm 8
 Because Jesus tasted death for us, we can be sure that we will share his
rule over creation.
For whom did Jesus taste death?

For everyone?

Then why is not everyone saved?

It was fitting that the Son of God suffer
For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things
10

exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make

the founder/captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

 God could have engineered a way to save us that did not require the
suffering of the Son of God. But it was fitting for Jesus to save us at the
cost of His agony. -------- L O V E
It was fitting that the Son of God suffer
For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in
10

bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder/captain of

their salvation perfect through sufferings.

The Captain of our Salvation – Jesus

- A captain makes all the arrangements for the march, and Jesus makes
all the arrangements for our progress as Christians.
- A captain gives the commands to the troops, Jesus commands us.
- Leads the way, He is the way
- Encourages His men
- Rewards his troops, Jesus rewards His followers
It was fitting that the Son of God suffer
For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in
10

bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder/captain of

their salvation perfect through sufferings.

“Now, seeing that it is the will of the Lord to lead us to glory by the Captain of
our salvation, I want you to be worthy of your Leader. Do you not think that,
sometimes, we act as if we had no Captain? We fancy that we have to fight our
way to heaven by the might of our own right hand, and by our own skill; but it
is not so. If you start before your Captain gives you the order to march, you
will have to come back again; and if you try to fight apart from your Captain,
you will rue the day.” (Spurgeon)
It was fitting that the Son of God suffer

It was fitting for the Father to do this in the sense that it pleased the
Lord to bruise Him (Isaiah 53:10) to do it for the sake of bringing
many sons to glory. (Glory – Psalm 8, Hebrews 2:7)

“We know that had he only been God yet still he would not have
been fitted for a perfect Savior, unless he had become man. Man had
sinned; man must suffer. It was man in whom God’s purposes had
been for a while defeated; it must be in man that God must triumph
over his great enemy.” (Spurgeon)
He sent his Son to taste death for us, deliver us from the
futility and defeat and misery and condemnation of sin and
death, and lead us to glory. To do this he has suffered and
entered before us into that very glory, as verse 9 says: "Jesus,
because of the suffering of death is crowned with glory and
honor."
Jesus sanctifies and calls us brethren.
11
For He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one
source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers,12 saying,
“I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the
congregation I will sing your praise.” 13 And again, “I will put my
trust in him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children God has given
me.”
11
For both the One who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are
of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers. 12 He
says: “I will proclaim Your name to My brothers; I will sing Your
praises in the assembly.”13 And again: “I will put My trust in
Him.” And once again: “Here am I, and the children God has given
Me.”
Jesus sanctifies and calls us brethren.

Psalms 22: 22
I will declare your name to my people;
in the assembly I will praise you.

Isaiah 8
17
I will wait for the LORD, who is hiding his face from the
descendants of Jacob.I will put my trust in him. 18 Here am I, and the
children the LORD has given me. We are signs and symbols in Israel
from the LORD Almighty, who dwells on Mount Zion.
In the midst of the assembly I will sing praise to You

Psalm 22:22 reminds us that Jesus sang, singing worship to

His Father among His brethren.

Did Jesus sing? Yes, literally. After supper, they sang a hymn. It
must have been most thrilling to hear Christ’s voice, quivering with
emotion, singing the Psalms, which constituted the Great Hallel.”
(Spurgeon)
Here am I and the children whom God has given Me

The phrasing of this quote from Isaiah 8:18 shows how

precious Jesus’ people are to Him. “He likes to dwell on that
fact. They are precious to him in themselves, but far more
precious as the Father’s gift to him. Some things are valued
by you as keepsakes given by one you love; and so are we
dear to Christ because his Father gave us to him.”(Spurgeon)
In Hebrews 2:9-13, we see Jesus:

 Suffer and die

 God’s love and grace
 Glorify God
 Bring us into the family of God
