Beam-Column

Example – determinate beam

Example1:
• Simply supported member of span length=8m is subjected to
uniformly distributed load = 50kN/m. beam is loaded about major axis
and braced at ends and midpoint. Member is subjected to axial load=
100 kN.

• Check adequacy of IPE400 (A36 steel) cabaple to resist the applied

loads
Example 1-- 2nd order Analysis
• Simply supported >>> Mu= WL^2/8 = 400 kN.m (1st order moment)
• Simply Supported >>> deflection = 5WL^4/384EI = 57.6/1.35 = 42.6
mm
• Deflection = 5 (50/1.35)* 8000^4 / (384 * 200000* 231280000) =
42.6mm
• Hint: deflection is divided by 1.35 to convert load to service load
• M2nd = 400 + (42.6/1000 * 100) = 405 kN.m
Example 1- Column and beam capacities
• Column Action (ɸPn = 0.9Ag Fcr)
• (KL/r)x = 1*8000/165 = 48.6
• (KL/r)y = 4000/39.5 = 101 (More critical) (0.9Fcr = 170 Mpa)
• ɸPn = 170*8450/1000 = 1436.5 kN (Pu/ ɸPn = 100/1436 <0.2)

• Beam-Action (Lp < Lb < Lr) (Cb = 1.0)

• Mp = Zx fy = 324 kN.m, Mr = 0.7Sx Fy = 201 kN.m
• ɸMn = 0.9 * 1.0 * (324 – (324-201)((4-1.99)/(5.17-1.99))) = 216 kN.m
• ɸMp=292 kN.m> ɸMn
• Therefore, ɸMn = 216 kN.m
Example1– Beam-column capacity check
• Pu/ ɸPn = 100/1436 = 0.069 < 0.2

• 0.069/2 + (405/216)+ 0 = 1.56 >1 >>>> Section is not adequate

• We need to increase size of section as section approximately achieve

the plastic capacity and axial load is not dominant
Example 2- Frame
• Two-Story building of story height= 4m, and span length of 8m.
• All beams are IPE400 while All columns are HE300A
• Beams are subjected to uniformly distributed dead= 18 kN/m, Live load =
10 kN/m
• Lateral wind load at joints = 20kN, 40 kN for 1st and 2nd floor respectively.
• Beams are braced at end and mid-points

• CHECK IF COLUMN SECTION IS ADEQUATE TO RESIST THE APPLIED LOADS

SAFELY CONSIDERING PIN SUPPORT WITH GROUND
Solution-Internal forces
• Internal forces (2nd Order) due to U1=1.2D+1.6L and
U2=0.9D+1.0L+1.6W are summarized below
Top Right U1 U2 Mid Top U1 U2

Axial kN 175 133 Axial 403 280

M kN.m 223 219 M 0 115

Bottom Right Mid bottom

Axial 355 287 Axial 793 553

M 82 202 M 0 190
Column and beam actions
• Column Action (ɸPn = 0.9Ag Fcr)
• (KL/r)y = 4000/74.9 = 53 (More critical) (0.9Fcr = 194 Mpa)
• ɸPn = 194*11300/1000 = 2192 kN

• Beam-Action (Lp < Lb < Lr)

• Lb=4m , Lp=3.77m, Lr= 9.44m
• Mp = Zx fy = 343 kN.m, Mr = 0.7Sx Fy = 219 kN.m
• ɸMn = 0.9 * 1 * (343 – (343-219)((4-3.77)/(9.44-3.77))) = 297 kN.m
• Therefore, ɸMn = 297 kN.m
Check beam column for critical cases
• 175 kN, 223 kN.m >>>> ratio = 0.79 < 1

• 793kN, Zero Moment >>>> ratio = 0.36 <1

• 553 kN, 190 kN.m (check)

• Pu/ ɸPn = 553/2192 = 0.25> 0.2
• Pu/ɸPn + (8/9 Mu/ɸMn)
• 0.25 + (8/9 (190/297)) = 0.82 <1
• Section is adequate for these loadings
