(USING WASTE MATERIALS)

INTRODUCTION
Concrete is the one of the most widely
used construction material in the world.

It should be durable and sustainable.

But the current concrete construction

practice is unsustainable because, it
consumes enormous quantities of natural
rocks, sand, and drinking water.
Environment and Development
sustainability means “Meeting the needs
of the present without compromising the
ability of the future generations to meet
their own needs”.

Recycling of materials and use of waste

materials.
In this study, fine aggregate is replaced
with quarry rock dust and marble powder,
coarse aggregate is replaced with crushed
concrete.

By implementing this project, it does not

pave the way for environmental causes.
SCOPE
The purpose of this study has to
investigate innovative and cost effective
ways to use waste materials.

It also envisaged that the reuse activities

would create a starting point for the
formulation of commercially viable
products and pave the way for new ideas
and future projects.
OBJECTIVE
With the use of waste material , pollution
rate is majorly reduced compared to
conventional concrete.
To ensure durability in eco friendly
concrete, compared to strength of
conventional concrete
This project may leads the concrete
technology department into sustainable
change in the usage of aggregates
LITERATURES

Strength of concrete made with crushed

concrete as coarse aggregate was studied
in august 2006 by A.M.Alkhaleefi.

Properties of green concrete containing

quarry rock dust and marble powder as
fine aggregate was studied by M.Shahul
hameed and A.S.S.Sekar in june 2009.
The effect of using waste marble dust as
fine aggregate on the mechanical
properties of concrete by Bahar demiral in
july 2010

Use of Recycled Aggregates in

Construction is investigated by Cement
Concrete & Aggregates Australia May
2008
MATERIALS
Quarry rock dust: Quarry Rock Dust can
be defined as residue, from the quarrying
industries

Itdoes not contains any silt materials and

organic matters and can be produced for
desired gradation

50 % of quarry dust is replaced in place

of fine aggregate
Marble powder

The Marble powder was obtained as an

industrial byproduct from the deposits of
marble factories, which forms during the
sawing shaping and polishing processes.

Marble powder is partially replaced

instead of using river sand
Crushed concrete
Crushed concrete is composed of rock
fragments coated with cement, sands
and/or filler.
Methodology
Material testing
Sieve analysis ,specific gravity and water
absorption tests are taken for fine
aggregates including replaceable materials

Sieve analysis ,specific gravity ,crushing

value ,aggregate impact test and water
absorption test are taken for coarse
aggregate i.e for gravel and crushed
concrete
Mix design
Proportions of concrete is 1:1.49:3.17 and water
cement ratio is 0.5 designed as per IS 10262-
1982.

Advantages

Use of quarry rock dust increases

durability.

Use of marble powder increases

cohesiveness of concrete and voids of the
concrete.

Use of crushed concrete reduces

environmental pollution.
Conclusions
The 28 day design strength was accomplished
using concrete with recycled aggregates.

The workability is lowered when the recycled

aggregate is used due to the tendency of the
recycled aggregate to absorb more water in the
matrix.

Test results show that these industrial wastes are

capable of improving hardened concrete
performance.
