NATO - National Atlantic Treaty Organization

• An international organization which constists of the USA, Canada,


Britain, and other 26 European countries, all whom have agreed
to support one another if they are attacked.

• Established by North Atlantic Treaty on April 4, 1949 for purpose


of collective security.

• Formed after the Second World War.

NATO’s Primary Purpose

• To defend nations from threats by communists countries. The


United States also wanted to maintain a presence in Europe. It
sought to prevent a resurgence of aggressive nationalism and
foster political union. In this way, NATO made the formation of
the European Union possible.
