Amado Vera Hernandez
(1903-1970)
• Also known as Amante Hernani, Herminia dela Riva and Julio
Abril in his some works.
• He also called “Makata ng mga Manggagawa.”
• Was born on September 13, 1903 in Hagonoy, Bulacan but
grew up in Tondo, Manila.
• He is the son of Juan Hernandez and Clara Vera.
• He studied in Gagalangin, Tondo, the Manila High School and
the American Correspondence School where he finished a
Bachelor of Arts degree.
• He married sarswela actor and and kundiman queen
Honorata “Atang dela Rama which also became a member of
Orden ng Pambansang Alagad ng Sining.
• He began his writing career as a journalist and later editor of
various pre-WWII Tagalog newspaper like Watawat,
Pagkakaisa, Makabayan, Sampaguita, and Mabuhay Extra.
• He joined the Akademya ng Wikang Tagalog and the Manila
Press Club.
• During WWII, he served as an intelligence officer for the
resistance and after the war. He was appointed and elected as
councilor of Manila in 1945 and 1947 where he sponsored
ordinances aimed at promoting worker’s right and freedom.
• He immersed himself in the labor movement in the late 1940’s
and early 1950’s.
• He represented the Newspaper Guild of the Philippine in the
country’s biggest and most militant labor federation, the
Congress of Labor Organization (CLO).
• During the second decade, he was a member and vis president
of Aklatang Bayan and later he joined Ilaw and Panitik.
• Because of pursuing the worker’s cause, he was imprisoned in
1951 for alleged subversive activities. He was released on
parole in 1956 and was finally acquitted of charges in 1964.
• He returned to journalistic practice, writing as a columnist for
Taliba from 1962 to 1967, serving as a editor of the radical
newspaper, Ang Masa, until his death 1970.
• He died at the age of 67 on March 24, 1970.

Rogelio R. Sicat
(1940-1997)
• Was born on June 26, 1940 in the town of San Isidro in the
province of Neuva Ecijia, as the sixth of eight children of
Estanislao Sikat and Crisanta Rodriguez.
• He is sometimes referred to as “Rogelio Sikat”. He uses
“Sikat” as a pen name to reflect on his Filipino identity.
• He was a prolific Filipino novelist, playwright and short story
writer.
• Sikat was also a distinguished educator. He was a former
university professor and former college dean of the University
of the Philippines College of Arts and Letters.
• Sikat went to Manila to study in the University of Santo
Tomas, one of the premier universities in the Philippines.
• Sikat served as a writer for the university official newspaper.
The Varsitarian
• Sikat also worked in the newspaper and magazine industry,
serving as a feature writer for the long-running Liwayway
magazine.
• Sikat continued his love for writing After finishing his
Bachelor of Arts in Journalism.
• In 1997, the distinguished writer and educator Sikat died of
cancer. He receive several posthumous awards including the
Manila Critics’ Circle National Book Award for translation, a
year after his death.
