Mr.

know All
4 LEVEL INTERACTING WITH TEXT
Literal Comprehension
The story Mr. Know All is written by an English writer, W.
Somerset Maugham. The narrator was on his trip from America to Japan by
ship after the end of First World War. It was a journey of Fourteen days. As
accomodation were difficult to get, he had to share a room on a ship with Mr.
Kelada. As the name Mr. Kelada was not English, he disliked him even
without seeing him. Thinking that his journey would be boring, the narrator
went to the smoking room and started playing cards. Suddenly, a man
entered there and introduced himself as Mr. Kelada. He was chatty. He
discussed on plays, pictures and politics. In three days, he knew everyone on
ship. He always thought that people liked him, but no one actually liked him
on the ship and began to call him " Mr. Know All". He always played a leading
role in every discussion and work. He thought that he was always correct in
his opinion. An officer, Mr. Ramsay was
Also travelling with his wife in the same ship. Mr. Ramsay was an American
Consular Service at Kobe (city of Japan). His wife Mrs. Ramsay was a pretty
woman. Mr. Ramsay has stayed one year alone in Japan leaving Mr. Ramsay in
Newyork. Once Mr. Kelada , the narrator, Mr. Ramsay with his wife were
having a dinner on the same table. They discussed about pearls. Mr. Kelada
said that he was a pearls businessman. He knew all the best pearls in the
world. He was going to japan to look into Japanese pearls business. He pointed
to the chain that  Mrs. Ramsay  was wearing and told them that he could tell
it's worth quite correctly. Mr. Kelada calculated that it's price is not less than
thirty thousand dollar in standard market. But Mr. Ramsay told that the pearls
was bought paying 18 dollar only at a departmental store. They bet for 100
dollar. Mrs. Ramsay didn't like this but her husband gave the chain to Mr.
Kelada for test. Mr. Kelada examined the pearls with his magnifying glass and
found the pearls original. When he was about to speak that it was a real
pearls, he saw Mrs. Ramsay face she was looking nervous.
Although the pearls were original, he said that he was wrong. Then he
handed a hundred dollar note to Mr. Ramsay. The defeats of Mr. Kelada was
spread all over the ship and he had tolerate many jokes. Next morning, when
the narrator and Mr. Kelada were in their cabin. Someone pushed a letter
through their door. It belongs to Mr. Kelada, inside the envelope there was a
hundred dollar note. Then the narrator knew the secret. The secret was that
the chain was of real pearls which Mrs. Ramsay was bought in Newyork with
the money that was given to her by her lover. But he spoke lie and had told
her husband that she bought that chain only in 18 dollar. Then the writer was
positive to Mr. Kelada (Mr. know All).
 Interpretation
                             The
writer may be trying to show humanity and nature of
women. Outer cover can never represent the inner reality. Although, Mr.
Kelada is hated by all, he proved to be the best example of humanity. He
became fool and lost money and prestige but he saved the happy married
life of Mr. And Mrs. Ramsay. The story also show the dual character of
woman.
 Critical Thinking
                              Although
the story is very interesting to read, there are some
points in the story which I don't agree. Mr. Kelada said that Mrs. Ramsay
bought her pearls in Newyork with the money that was given to her by her
lover. Is it possible to read other people mind without even knowing her
properly?
 Assimilation
                             After
reading this story, I got to know that we can't judge
people from their appearance. Mr. Kelada who seem to very talkative , who
behave like he has the knowledge of everything found to be good hearted
person. Similarly Mrs. Ramsay who seems to be very gentle, well-behaved
was actually cheating on her husband. So from this story I learn that we
should not judge a book from it's cover.
