similar this d efinition is to the p revious d efi-

that one quantity increases w hile the other d ecreases:

D irect Proportionality Inverse Proportionality

Constant of Proportionality

  Direct: As increases increases Example: You make $36 working 3 hours

  Constant (rate) of Proportionality:  $ 36 =12 𝑑𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑎𝑟𝑠 𝑝𝑒𝑟 h𝑜𝑢𝑟
3 h𝑟𝑠

  Indirect: As increases decreases Example: 4 people can paint a fence in 3 hours

4  𝑝𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒 ×3 h𝑟𝑠 =12 𝑝𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒 h𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠

  Constant of Proportionality:
Solving Proportionality Problems

Example: You make $36 working 3 hours How much money would you make working 5 hours?

 $ 36 =12 𝑑𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑎𝑟𝑠 𝑝𝑒𝑟 h𝑜𝑢𝑟

3 h𝑟𝑠

How many hours would it take 6 people?

Example: 4 people can paint a fence in 3 hours 12
  𝑝𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒 h𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠
=2 h𝑟𝑠
6 𝑝𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒
4  𝑝𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒 ×3 h𝑟𝑠 =12 𝑝𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒 h𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠
How many people would it take to finish in 2 hours?
12
  𝑝𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒 h𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠 =6 𝑝𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒
2h𝑟𝑠

Chapter 5: Rates
Exchange Rates
The exchange rate for Canadian dollars (CAN) to USD is 1:0.76.

a) If you exchanged 35 CAN for USD, how many USD would you get?
 1𝐶𝐴𝑁 35 𝐶𝐴𝑁
=
0.76𝑈𝑆𝐷 𝑥 𝑈𝑆𝐷
𝑥=35 ×0.76=26.6 𝑈𝑆𝐷

b) If you exchanged 35 USD for CAN, how many CAN would you get?
 1𝐶𝐴𝑁 𝑥 𝐶𝐴𝑁   35
=
0.76𝑈𝑆𝐷 35 𝑈𝑆𝐷 𝑥= ≈ 46.05 𝐶𝐴𝑁
0.76
Better Deal: cost per unit
You realize in a moment of panic that you are almost out of diapers for your two-year
old. You make a midnight run to the store to pick up some more. Only two brands are
available in your kid’s size. The Pampers box costs $25.38 and contains 68 diapers. The
Huggies box costs $57.73 and contains 160 diapers. Which brand is the better deal?
(You will end up using them all no matter which you buy… of course you will)

 $ 25.38
Pampers cost per diaper: ≈ 37 𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠 𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑝𝑒𝑟
68 𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑠

  $ 57.73
Huggies cost per diaper: ≈ 36 𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠 𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑝𝑒𝑟
160 𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑠
