Dear Jesus,
Guide me as I learn today, For if I contribute, and help the
how to live this life on earth. world to grow.
To face it’s struggle and it’s strifeWith your wisdom and your grace
and improve my worth. Then I shall feel that I have
Not just the lesson in a book, succeeded
or how the rivers flow. and filled my place.
But how to choose the proper path, And so I ask your blessing,
wherever I may go. Dear Jesus ,
To understand eternal truth that I may do my part
and know the right from wrong. To study well and study hard,
And gather all the beauty of a flower with confidence and character
and a song. And happiness of heart.
AMEN.

Addition of Rational Algebraic Expressions
Objectives:
The learners should be able to:
❏Add rational algebraic expressions
❏Solve word problems involving addition of rational
algebraic expressions.
Addition of Rational Algebraic
Expressions
Scenario
●  John receives his daily allowance from his parents. Yesterday he
saved () of his daily allowance. Today, he saved ) of his allowance.
What part of his allowance in two days did he save?

What operation should be used to solve the problem?

What is the equation will be?

Scenario
●  John receives his daily allowance from his parents. Yesterday he saved () of his
daily allowance. Today, he saved ) of his allowance. What part of his allowance in
two days did he save?

The operation to be used is addition and the equation is:

() + ) = N

The addends are rational expressions. How do we add rational

expressions?
Addition of Rational Algebraic Expressions

❏Rational expressions with same denominators are

called similar rational expressions.
❏We can add similar rational expressions by adding the
numerators and copying the common denominator.

Solution:

() + ) = Add the numerator.

Copy the denominator.

= Combine like terms.

Answer: The part that he saved is .

Example 1: +

Solution:

+ = Add the numerator.

Copy the denominator.

Combine similar terms.

Addition of Rational Algebraic Expressions

❏Rational expressions with different denominators are

dissimilar rational expressions.

Example 3: +

Solution:

+ = + Identify the LCD: (W+2)(W-1)

= + Use the LCD as the new denominator and then

change the dissimilar to similar.

= Combine or add the similar terms.

= Simplify or reduce the rational expression if you

can. In this case, the rational expression cannot
be simplified.

Example 4: +

Solution:

+ = + Identify the LCD: (2a-1)(2a+1)

= + Use the LCD as the new denominator and then

change the dissimilar to similar.

= Combine or add the similar terms.

Simplify or reduce the rational expression if you
= or can. In this case, the rational expression cannot
be simplified.

Example 5: +

Solution:
+ = + Identify the LCD: (x+4)(x-1)(x+3)

= + Use the LCD as the new denominator and
then change the dissimilar to similar.

Key Takeaways
To add similar rational expressions, combine
the similar terms in the numerator and then
copy the common denominator.
To add dissimilar rational expressions,
change first the dissimilar rational expressions
to similar rational expressions using the LCD.
Then follow the steps in adding similar rational
expression.
