Martin Luther King

• Hi I'm Felipe Valbuena. Welcome to this

presentation. Next I would like to talk about
Martin Luther King, who was a great world
leader.
• To start, this is what my presentation will contain:
1. Personal information
2. Childhood
3. Youthfulness
4. Fight against racial segregation
5. Works and ideas
6. “I have a dream”
7. Awards
8. Murder
9. Statistics
10. Conclusions
11. References
1 PERSONAL INFORMATION

• Martin Luther King Jr. was an activist leader and Baptist pastor
(he was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta and died on April
4, 1968 in Memphis at age 39) known primarily for:

• - Fight peacefully against racial segregation and discrimination

in the United States.

• - Recite the famous speech "I have a dream".

2. CHILHOOD

• Martin Luther King Jr. He was the middle of three brothers fruit of
the marriage of Martin Luther King Sr. and Alberta Williams King.
Luther King was originally baptized as Michael King Jr. (his father's
birth name), but after a family trip to Germany, Michael King Sr.
decided to change his own name and that of his son by Martin
Luther King, in honor of Augustinian theologian Martin Luther.
• Martin grew up in a secure and loving environment. Martin Sr. was
the most disciplined, while his wife's gentleness easily balanced
out the father's more strict hand.
3. YOUTHFULNESS

• At age 15, King Jr. entered the Morehouse College, a university for
young African-American students, from which he graduated in
sociology three years later. He graduated in this discipline at age
22 (for this time I take Mahatma Gandhi as an example of
leadership).
4. FIGHT AGAINST RACIAL SEGREGATION

In 1955, following the arrest of a black woman after refusing to give

up her bus seat to a white man, King decided to start a non-violent
protest against the racial segregation suffered by his city. Taking
advantage of the resonance he had as a pastor, and what was
competent, he suggested to the black population of Montgomery not
to use public transport until that type of racist demonstrations were
completely eradicated. One year after the start of the bus boycott,
racial segregation was declared illegal on public transport in the
city.
5 WORKS AND IDEAS

• Martin Luther King understood racial equality as an essential

condition of human dignity, which was on the other hand
legitimized, on a political level, by the principles of democracy,
and on the plane moral, by religious principles.
• King adapted and developed Gandhi's concept of non-violence,
which he applied creatively in a series of anti-election campaigns
that made him the most prestigious leader of the American civil
rights movement.
6 “I HAVE A DREAM”

• The success in Montgomery made the name of Luther King famous

throughout the country and more and more followers and activists
joined the fight for racial equality. In 1963, at the peak of his
cause, he led, along with another 250,000 people, a march for
Washington in which he advocated, especially, to improve the
living conditions and integration of the black population of the
south of the country. In this peaceful protest, the largest that the
American capital has ever experienced, he recited his famous
speech "I have a dream", which managed to inspire many people
7 AWARDS

• Nobel Peace Prize (1964)

• Presidential Medal of Freedom (1977, posthumous)
• Gold Medal of the Congress of the United States (2004,
posthumous)
8 MURDER

• After receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, Luther King continued his
struggle for equality of the black race until an April 4, 1968 was
killed in a motel in Memphis by James Earl Ray, a racist fanatic
9 STATISTICS
• The following statistics prove the work of Martin Luther King. This
prove somehow that the objective of reducing racism was
achieved, even when it is a hard task

Evolution of
incarceration rates 1960
- 2010
10 CONCLUSIONS

• To finish this presentation I can conclude Martin obtained great

social achievements in a society as racist as it was the United
States at that time (and as it still is)
•   in favor of the afro community because his spirit he was
peaceful, he was a cautious and persuasive person, he was very
accurate in decisions and responsible with his speech. That's why
he had the confidence of the people and the power to encourage
and inspire the entire Afro community.
