WHAT IS TURNSTILE
A turnstile, also called a baffle gate,
is a form of gate which allows one
person to pass at a time.
It can also be made so as to enforce
one-way traffic of people, and in
addition, it can restrict passage only
to people who insert a coin, a
ticket, a pass, or similar.
Thus a turnstile can be used in the
case of paid access (sometimes
called a fare-gate or ticket barrier
when used for this purpose), for
example to access public transport,
a pay toilet, or to restrict access to
authorized people, for example in
the lobby of an office building.
HOW DOES A TURNSTILE WORK?
• A turnstile is a mechanical
gate, designed to only allow
one person to pass through
at a time.
• A turnstile or “baffle gate”
consists of revolving
horizontal arms that are
fixed to a vertical pole.
• These super smart gates are
typically used to reinforce a
one-way stream of traffic or
to restrict entry to those
who insert a coin, ticket or
pass of some kind
TYPES OF TURNSTILE
•Enhanced Security
•Visual Deterrent (discouragement)
•Efficient Throughput
•Minimized Expenses
•Increased Analysis
•Operational Flexibility
•Emergencies & Power Outages
•Installation and Maintenance
•Technology trends
WHAT PURPOSE WILL YOUR TURNSTILE
SERVE?
• Considerations may include managing shift changes in a work
environment, parking lot entry, etc.
• It's important to consider where the unit is being placed and how
frequently it's being used.
• Also, will people be using a credential (ID, ticket or token, for
example), or is the turnstile merely there to count how many people
pass?
PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES
Persons with disabilities may have difficulties using
turnstiles. In these cases, generally a wide aisle gate or
a manual gate may be provided. At some locations
where luggage is expected, a line of turnstiles may be
entirely formed of wide aisle gates.
