Spain (1882-
1885)
Rizal’s Secret Mission
o To observe keenly the life and culture, languages and customs,
industries and commerce, and governments and laws of the
European nations in order to prepare himself in the mighty task
of liberating his oppressed people from Spanish tyranny.
Secret Departure for Spain
o Rizal’s departure for Spain was kept secret to avoid detection
by the Spanish authorities and the friars.
o On May 3, 1882, Rial departed on board the Spanish steamer
Salvadora bound to Singapore
Singapore
o During the voyage to Singapore he carefully observed the people and things on
board the steamer
o The ship captain, Donato Lecha, from Asturias, Spain, befriended him.
o To while away the tedious boredom of sea voyage, Rizal played chess with his
fellow passengers who were much older than he.
o On May 8, 1882, while the steamer was approaching Singapore, Rizal saw a
beautiful island
o The following day (May 9) the Salvadora docked at Singapore
From Singapore to Colombo
o In Singapore Rizal transferred to another ship Djemnah, a
French steamer, which left Singapore for Europe on May
11.
o On May 17, the Djemnah weighed anchor and resumed
the voyage towards Colombo, the capital of Ceylon (Sri
Lanka now), lonely and quiet and sad at the same time

First trip through Suez Canal
o From Colombo, the Djemnah continued the voyage crossing the Indian
Ocean to the Cape of Guardfui, Africa.
o At the next stopover, in Aden, Rizal went ashore to see the sights.
o It took the Djemnah five days to traverse the Suez Canal.
o At port said, the Mediterranean terminal of Suez Canal, Rizal landed in
order to see the interesting sights.
Naples and Marsilles
o From port said, the Djemnah proceeded on its way to Europe. On June 11, Rizal reached
Naples.
o On the night of June 12, the steamer docked at the French harbor of Marsilles.
Barcelona
o Rizal first impression of Barcelona, the greatest city of Cataluña and Spain’s second largest
city, was unfavorable. (ugly,dirty) nagbago (great city with atmosphere of freedom,
courageous, hosbitable.
o The Filipinos in Barcelona, some of whom were his schoolmates in the Ateneo, welcomed
Rizal.
Amor Patrio
o In progressive Barcelona, Rizla wrote a nationalistic eassay entitled “Amor
Patrio” (love of country)
o Rizal’s “Amor Patrio” under his pen-name Laong Laan, appeared in print
in Diariong Tagalog on August 20, 1882. send to Basilio teodoro Moran
o Publisher Basilio Teodoro Moran, deeply impressed by “Amor Patrio”
congratulated Rizal, and requested for more articles.

Manila moves to Madrid
o While sojourning in Barcelona, Rizal received sad news about the
cholera that was ravaging Manila and provinces.
o Another sad news from the Philippines was the chatty letter of
Chengoy recounting the unhappiness of Leonor Rivera, who was
getting thinner because of the absence of a loved one.
o In one of his letter (May 26, 1882) Paciano advised his younger
brother to finish the medical course in Madrid.
Life in Madrid
o On November 3, 1882, Rizal enrolled in the Universidad Central de
Madrid in two courses---- Medicine, and Philosophy and Letters.
o He studied painting and sculpture in the Academy of Fine Arts of San
Fernando
o Took lessons in French, German, and English under private instructors.
o Practised fencing and shooting in the Hall of Arms of Sanz y Carbonell.
o Rizal led a Spartan life in Madrid.
o On Saturday evenings, he visited the home of Don Pablo Ortiga y Rey
who lived with his son and daughter.
Romance with Consuelo Ortiga y Perrez
o Rizal was not a handsome man. In physique, he was neither dashing nor imposing, for he
was a shy small man, a few inches above feet in height.
o Rizal being a lonely young man in a foreign country, far from his natal land, was
attracted by Consuelo’s beauty and vivacity
o However, before his romance with Consuelo could blossom into a serious affair, he
suddenly backed out for two reasons
1. He was still engaged to Leonor Rivera and
2. His friend and co-worker in the Propaganda Movement, Eduardo de Lete, was madly in
love with Consuelo and he had no wish to break their friendship because of a pretty girl.

o In 1882 shortly after his arrival in Madrid, Rizal
joined the Circulo Hispano-Filipino, a society of
Spaniards and Filipinos.

Rizal as lover of Books
o A favorite pastime of Rizla in Madrid was reading.
o Rizal economized on his living expenses, and with the money he saved, he
purchased books from a second-hand bookstore owned by a certain Senor
Roses.
o Rizal deeply affected by Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin and Eugene
Sue’s The Wandering Jew (flipinos situation)
Rizal’s first visit to Paris (1883)
o During his first summer vacation in Madrid Rizal went to Paris, sojourning in
this gay capital of France from June 17 to August 20, 1883.
o Like all tourists, Rizal was charmingly titillated by the attractive sights of
Paris.
o On the other side of his visit in Paris, Rizal was mistaken by the Parisians as a
Japanese.
Rizal as a Mason
o In Spain Rizal came in close contact with prominent Spanish liberal and republican
Spaniards, who were mostly Mason(praternity)-
o Rizal was impressed by the way the Spanish Masons openly and freely criticized the
government policies and lambasted the friars, which could not be done in the Philippines.

o Later he transferred to Lodge Solidaridad (Madrid) where he became a Master Mason on
November 15, 1890.
o As a Mason, Rizal played a lukewarm role in Freemasonry, unlike M.H. del Pilar, G.
Lopez Jaena, and Mariano Ponce who were very active in Masonic affairs
Financial Worries
o After Rizal’s departure for Spain, things turned from bad to worse in
Calamba(TURKEY)
o But there came a time when a dreadful pest killed most of the turkeys.
o Due to hard times in Calamba, the monthly allowances of Rizal in Madrid
were late in arrival and there were times when they never arrived, causing
much suffering to him.
o A touching incident in Rizal’s life in Madrid occurred on June 24, 1884.

o The banquet on the evening of June 25, 1884 was sponsored by the Filipino
community to celebrate the double victory of the Filipino artist in the National
Exposition of Fine Arts in Madrid
o Speaking in sonorous Castilian, Rizal held his audience spellbound.
o This magnificent speech of Rizal was greeted with wild ovations for seldom did
the Spaniards hear such as oration from the lips of a brown Filipino which was
almost peerless in notability of thought, in Spanish rhetoric, in sincerity of
feeling, and in sonorous eloquence.
Rizal involved in student demonstrations
o On November 20, 21, and 22, 1884, the serene city of Madrid
exploded in other Filipino students of the Central University.
o Angered by the bigotry of the Catholic bishops, the university
students rose in violent demonstrations.
o The appointment of the new Rector intensified the fury of the student
demonstrators.
Studies completed in Spain
o Rizal completed his medical course in Spain. He was conferred the degree of
Licentiate in Medicine by the Universidad Central de Madrid on June 12, 1884.
