AMADO V. HERNANDEZ
(Sept. 13, 1903 – March 24, 1970)

National Artist for Literature (1973)

As a Writer
• While still a teenager, he began writing
in Tagalog for the newspapers
Watawat, Pagkakaisa, and Mabuhay,
where he became an editor.
• In 1922, at the age of 19, Hernandez
became a member of Aklatang Bayan,
a literary society of notable Tagalog
writers.
• His socio-political novels and other
works were based on his experiences as
a guerilla, as a labor leader, and as a
political detainee.
As a Freedom Fighter
• KaAmado joined the resistance
movement in 1941.
• During the WWII, he was an
intelligence operative of a guerilla
group whose operations covered
Bulacan and Sierra Madre.
• He came in contact with
HukBaLaHap (Hukbo ng Bayan Laban
sa Hapon) which was founded by Luis
Taruc and other communist leaders.
As a Labor Leader
• After the war, he organized labor unions
across the country through the Congress of
Labor Organizations (CLO) where he
became a president.
• Hernandez advocated revolution as a
means of change; thus, he led massive
labor strikes and demonstrations in
Manila.
• On January 20, 1951, the CLO
headquarters was raided by the military;
Hernandez was arrested on January 26 for
being suspected as one of the leaders of
rebellion.
Imprisonment
• Though the authorities could not find any
evidence to charge him, for six months,
he was transferred from one military camp
to another, before he was indicted of
rebellion with murder, arson and robbery –
a complex crime unheard of in Philippine
legal history.
• The case stirred the interest of civil rights
activists; thus, Hernandez was assisted at
various times by legal luminaries, such as
Claro M. Recto, Jose P. Laurel, and
Claudio Teehankee.
Imprisonment
• He wrote his most notable works while
inside the New Bilibid Prison in
Muntinlupa. Some of his works are Isang
Dipang Langit, Luha ng Buwaya, Bayang
Malaya, and Mga Ibong Mandaragit. He
also edited the prison’s newspaper,
Muntinlupa Courier.
• After 5 years of imprisonment, the
Supreme Court (SC) allowed him to post
bail on June 20, 1956. He then resumed
his journalistic career for the Tagalog
tabloid, Taliba.
Imprisonment
• On May 30, 1964, the SC acquitted
Hernandez.
• He continued to write and teach after his
acquittal.
• He was teaching at the UP Diliman when
he died of heart attack on March 24,
1970.
• Amado V. Hernandez was posthumously
honored as National Artist for Literature
in 1973. He was the first to receive the
title, together with Jose Garcia Villa.
