Transportation

A. Manpower
.

1. Walking
-Man first used the power of his own feet in
travelling while the load is either carried or
dragged.
2. Carrying Pole

- The ends of the poles are supported by two


men which the goods suspended from the pole
in between.
3. Back Load and Tumpline
• - The goods are carried on the back.
4. Sledge on Rollers
• -The moving of heavy burdens was to place
them on sledge which rested on the series of
rollers.
5. Sledge on Runners
• - A simple sledge, probably man-drawn, was in
used at the end of the the old stone age in
Northern Europe, as evidenced by fragments
of wooden runners which survived.
6. Travois
• - A so called pole arrangement which being
dragged by a humans or animals. A platform
or crossed- beams form on which a
burden/loads are place.
B. Animal Power
“Domesticated animals were used as potential
power available for transportation.”
• 1. Ox - used as draft animals to draw a chariots
• 2. Reindeer - They were ridden with saddles
and likes dogs they draw sledges of the far
north
• 3. Dog- The first domesticated animals to
slight to heavy loads
• 4. Donkey- In a caravan used to carry goods
between the cities in southwest Asia an Egypt.
• 5. Llama-The only new world animal other
than dog capable of domestication for the use
in transport.
• 6. Elephant – These animal were formerly
used in war and used in lumber industries in
Burma and Thailand
• 7. Horse – Used to draw wheel vehicle and for riding
for sometime until the introduction of mechanices
vehicles.
• 8. Camel- Used for transport
• Two types of camel
a. Two-humped Bactrian Camel
b. One-hump dromedary of Arabia
9. Yak – A longa hair type of cattle that lives on a high altitude
on the Tibetan plateau and used as a pack animal at heights
were horses and other ordinary animals could not survive
3. Wind Power
• 1. Ancient Chinese Kite- Have seen flown as a
popular past time in the far east.
• 2. Da Vinci’s Ornithoper- which derives its
principal support and propelling from flapping
wings like those of a bird
• 3. Montgolfier Balloon- The balloons
constructed of linen and inflated with hot air
traveled 9,000 yards and remained in the air
for 20 minutes.
• 4. Siemens’ Rocket Plane
• 5. Liliental Glider
• 5. Santos Dumont’s Airship
• 7. Wright Brothers Flying Manchine
• 8. Lindbregh’s Spirit of St Louis
