Net Worth
Colonel Sanders net worth was estimated to be
around $10 million at the time of his death. The KFC
brand is valued just over $5.5 billion dollars, up
since 2019.
Birthday
• Colonel Sanders was born Harland David Sanders on
September 9, 1890, in Henryville, Indiana, USA, to
Wilbur David and Margaret Ann. He had two
siblings, Clarence Sanders and Catherine Sanders.
His father owned an 80-acre farm on which he
worked until he broke his leg, post which he
became a butcher.
Early Life
Harland was only five when his father died of hay
fever. His mother began to work in a tomato
canning factory and the responsibility to cook for his
younger siblings fell on his shoulders. After his
mother remarried in 1902, his family relocated to
Greenwood, Indiana. Unable to get along with his
stepfather, he left home and school to work as a
farmhand and horse carriage painter. He left school
at the age of 12 to support his family.
Spouse and Children
In 1908, Colonel Sanders married Josephine King.
They had three children: Harland, Jr., Mildred
Ruggles, and Margaret. In 1947, he divorced
Josephine. Two years later, he married his secretary
Claudia Ledington.
Personal Life
• He created two institutions—‘Colonel Harland
Sanders Trust’ and ‘Charitable Organization’— to
support charities that took care of women and
children. Diagnosed with acute leukemia in June
1980, he died of pneumonia in Louisville, Kentucky
on December 16, 1980. He was buried in his
distinctive white suit and black string tie at ‘Cave
Hill Cemetery’ in Louisville.
Other Careers
Colonel sanders worked as a fireman, blacksmith,
lawyer, conductor, laborer, insurance salesman,
secretary, tire salesman, and a service stationer.
How Business was Developed
In 1952, Pete Harman became the first franchisee of
‘Kentucky Fried Chicken.’ Harman operated South
Salt Lake city’s largest restaurants. Don Anderson, a
sign painter hired by Harman, coined the name
‘Kentucky Fried Chicken.’ In 1955, the number of
customers visiting his Corbin restaurant reduced due
to the opening of the new Interstate 75.
Growth/Expansion
He sold the restaurant and traveled across the
country to appoint franchisees. Appointing
franchisees was a good strategy. KFC became a
pioneer food chain. By the mid-1960s, apart from its
600 American outlets, it boasted of outlets in
countries like Canada, England, Mexico, and
Jamaica.
Criticism
KFC has built a marketing campaign off the back of strongly-worded
consumer feedback, responding to a tweet reading: ‘Dear KFC, No one
likes your fries. Yours sincerely, The entire World.’ Instead of shirking
away from the harsh feedback from Twitter user @upgrade_music, KFC
spent money promoting the tweet, and numerous other cutting remarks,
across social media and out-of-home. Not one to shrug away from
criticism, having earlier this year run a print ad stating 'FCK' when it
managed to run out of chicken, KFC has owned the fact that some
members of the public were not fans of its fries. Instead, along with
creative agency Mother, it has developed a campaign to show the public
that it has listened to the feedback and will be rolling out new recipe
fries in November. The ‘Ain’t No Small Fry’ campaign is designed to
convert its fries haters.
Awards and Recognition
Charity Donations
KFC has been donating surplus food from its U.S. restaurants
in partnership with Food Donation Connection for more than
20 years through the Harvest Program, KFC’s prepared food
donation program. Through Harvest, participating KFC
restaurants donate wholesome, unsold food to hunger relief
agencies in communities across the U.S. So far in 2020 alone,
KFC restaurants have donated 652,579 pounds of food to 757
local charities in 48 states through the Harvest program, and
this critical work continues during this time of increased food
insecurity.
