NEDEIA OF POLOVRAGI

The fair in Polovragi, also known as the Fair of St.

Elijah or Nedeia of Polovragi, takes place yearly
from July 14 to July 20 and is one of the biggest
holidays of the year, in Oltenia, attended by
hundreds of traders and thousands of participants
from several regions of the country. In the past, it
was known as the biggest fair in Romania.

On this holiday, a small fair used to be held, where merchants

brought bells, shingles, ropes, harnesses, leather saddles,
shoes. The form of organization has changed over time and
many of the old traditions have been lost.
The potters who brought clay pots, bowls, jugs, wrapped in
hay and placed in oxen carts, no longer come. We no longer
meet the horse-drawn carousels or the fiddlers around whom
the peasants were dancing.
PRESERVATION OF TRADITIONS

In addition to the fair, which has taken on the imprint of modernity, in the
past years there have taken place traditional celebrations that consist of a
parade of the folk costumes in the area, the craft fair and a folk show.
