ARTIFICIAL

INSEMINATION
DEFINITION

• Refers to an assisted method of

reproduction which the sperm is provided
typically by means of masturbation and is
injected into the woman’s reproductive
tract through a catheter. It is an old form of
fertilizing a woman other than by a
naturally fertile intercourse.
Types: Artificial Insemination
• Intracervical Insemination - Semen is
introduced to the opening of the cervix by a health
professional with a needleless syringe.
• Intrauterine Insemination - washed sperm is
injected into the uterus with a catheter.
• Intrauterine Tuboperitoneal Insemination -
similar to IUI but includes sperm being injected
into the fallopian tubes, as well.
• Intratubal Insemination - sperm is introduced
solely to the fallopian tubes
PROCEDURE
TECHNIQUES OF THE
PROCEDURES
1. A medication is administered to active egg development.
2. The semen is obtained by means of masturbation after a
designated few days of refraining from ejaculation.
3. The seminal processing follows which is characterized by
washing and purification of the semen specimen at the
laboratory.
4. The purified and segregated male cell is finally insemination
or injected either into the cervix as in cervical insemination
APPLICABILITY
 Impotency, male sterility, and other male factor infertility
 Couples with immunological irregularities
 Women’s infertility accompanied with endometriosis indicating the abnormal
presence of endometrial tissue in locations such as vagina, cervix , fallopian
tubes and others; anovulatory infertility referring to irregularity or cessation of
ovulation
 The procedure may also be of help to women who are ovulating on their own
a compared to those who are just medically stimulated to ovulate.
CATEGORIES

Artificial insemination can be basically

categorized into:

1.Homologous Insemination
2.Heterologous Insemination
3.Artificial Insemination Outside Marriage
1. HOMOLOGOUS
INSEMINATION
 In the practice, which is usually performed by a
Gynaecologist, the husband by masturbation
produces a sample of semen. He will usually
have been advised to remain sexually continent
for a week or so before the sample is collected,
in order that its quality and quantity may be
satisfactory. To the semen is added a measured
quantity of a specially constituted buffer solution;
this is then frozen for purposes of storage.
2. HETEROLOGOUS
INSEMINATION

Also called artificial insemination

by a donor, the fact that the
semen is obtained from a source
other than the husband.
3. ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION
OUTSIDE MARRIAGE

The procedure which simply

takes place between unmarried
man and woman who may not
regard marriage act as the only
licit (lawful or not forbidden)
means of transmitting life.
IS ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION MORAL?
Artificial insemination is instrinsically evil
on the ff. gounds:

Transgression of the will of god expressed in

the new law of nature.
 the naturally devised means of transmitting life is
no other than the marital act. Now, by AI, the said
act is deliberately excluded from procreation and
replaced with a medical means ,that is, the
insertion of a thin and soft catheter containing
sperm into the wife’s reproductive tract – a
procedure enormously contrary to nature.
IS ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION MORAL?
Artificial insemination is instrinsically evil
on the ff. gounds:

Usurpation of God’s Creative Power of

Authorship Over Life.
 by its very procedure AI usurps God’s authorship over
life through the employment of artificially concocted
means other than His designed way of transmitting life. It
is also an expression of man’s abusive and manipulative
act of going beyond the border of his power of
stewardship by , more or less, assuming that which
exclusively belongs to God – the power of authorship
over life
IS ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION MORAL?
Artificial insemination is instrinsically evil
on the ff. gounds:

 Against Human Dignity.

 the claim of a right to the baby’s life
implies that the child is an object to own
and to possess which reduces him/her to a
mere biological property over which one
has right thereby violating his/her human
dignity, value, and worth.
MORAL DISTINCTIONS AMONG
THE CATEGORIES
Artificial Insemination By Husband (Homologous)
• The production of semen by means of
masturbation and how it is inseminated, that
is by way other than the naturally fertile
intercourse for protection mainly constitute
the moral problem of artificial insemination.
•This is nothing but immoral
MORAL DISTINCTIONS AMONG
THE CATEGORIES

Artificial Insemination Outside Marriage

•Side from the presence of the above-mentioned evil elements,
artificial insemination outside marriage can be construed to be
constitutive of a technical form of fornication. It’s component that is
present in this category technically resides in the Insemination and
reception of semen involving unmarried man and woman.
•The natural law dictates that the procreation of a new life may be
only the fruit of marriage. Marriage alone safeguards the dignity of
husband and wife and provides for the proper upbringing of the child.
•Considering the foregoing arguments, Artificial Insemination Outside
marriage is morally worse than Artificial Insemination by husband.
MORAL DISTINCTIONS AMONG
THE CATEGORIES

Artificial Insemination By Donor (Heterologous)

•If artificial insemination outside marriage is more immoral than
homologous insemination, artificial insemination by donor is even
more immoral the artificial insemination outside marriage, and the
worst of them all.
•is substantially an adulterous procedure. The element of adultery
technically resides in the use and placement of semen into the body
of a woman from a man who is not her lawfully wedded husband.
•Only marriage partners have mutual rights over their bodies for the
procreation of a new life, and these rights are exclusive,
nontransferable and inalienable.
