Lesson 1: Shear flow due to bending
Topic 2: Problems on shear flow due to bending

Problem:1

Determine the shear flow distribution

in the thin-walled Z-section shown in
figure, due to a shear Load Sy applied
through the shear center of the section.

Given Data:
Z- Section (Thin walled)
Thin walled - Approximation beam (higher order of thickness is very small and
negligible)
shear Load Sy applied through the shear center of the section
The origin for our system of reference axes coincides with the centroid of the
section at the midpoint of the web.
Since Sy is applied through the shear center, no torsion exists and the shear flow
distribution
Sx= 0

Parameter Formulae
Ixx = {(breadth*height3)/12} + {Area*(y-Y)2)}
Moment of Inertia, I
Iyy = {(height*breadth3)/12} + {Area*(x-X)2)}
(Ixx, Iyy, Ixy)
Ixy = {Area*(x-X)*(y-Y))}

Result:
Parameter Result
Ixx = h3t/3
Moment of Inertia, (Ixx, Iyy, Ixy) Iyy = h3t/12
Ixy = h3t/8
On bottom flange (y= -h/2, x=(-h/2) + S1, where 0<S1< h/2
q1 = 0 (@S1=0)
q2 = (0.42Sy/h) (@S1 = h/2)
Shear flow, q
For q=0 @ S1 = 0.336h
On web (y= (-h/2)+S2, where 0<S2<h, x=0
q23 = (Sy/h)*1.245

Topic 2: Problems on shear
flow due to bending
Shear flow distribution on
flanges and web sections (thin
walled) are analyzed. The free
edges of the flanges have zero
shear flow.
For the symmetrical
geometry, the shear flow
distribution is also symmetry
(magnitude of shear flow ).
