2 Mitosis
Unit 5: Cell Reproduction
About 25 million cells per
second are produced by an
adult human body every day.
All cells come from the
division of pre-existing cells.
Student
Objectives
1. Describe the stages of
mitosis.
2. Compare cytokinesis
in animal cells with
cytokinesis in plant
cells.
Stages of Mitosis
• Mitosis is the division of the nucleus, which occurs
during cell division.
• Mitosis is a continued process that allows for the
organized distribution of a cell’s copied DNA to
offspring cells.
• Mitosis has four stages:
1. Prophase
2. Metaphase
3. Anaphase
4. Telophase
1. Prophase
• Prophase begins with the shortening
and tight coiling of DNA into
chromosomes.
• The two copies of each chromosome
– chromatids – stay connected to one
another by the centromere.
• In this phase, the nucleus and the
nuclear membrane break down and
disappear.
Centrosom
es during • Centrosomes appear next to the disappearing nucleus. In
animal cells, each centrosome contains a pair of small,
cylindrical bodies called centrioles.
