Stanza 1
In winter I get up at night

And dress by yellow candle-light.

In summer, quite the other way,

I have to go to bed by day.

Paraphrase :
The poet tells us that in winter, he gets up too
early in the morning. It is still dark. He has to
use some candles to get dressed.
On the contrary, in summer, the sun doesn’t set
until late at night. He has to go to bed although
it is still day light.
I have to go to bed and see

The birds still hopping on the tree,

Or hear the grown-up people's feet

Still going past me in the street.

Paraphrase :
The poet tells us that he has to go to bed
early in the summer when the sky is clear
and blue. He watches the birds jumping on
the trees then. He listens clearly to footsteps
of people walking by his window in the
street.
And does it not seem hard to you,

When all the sky is clear and blue,

And I should like so much to play,

To have to go to bed by day?

Paraphrase:
The poet says that it seems too hard and
painful for him to go to bed when the sky is
is clear and blue and it is still day light. He
wants to play and enjoy himself. He doesn’t
like to go to bed early.
The main idea of the poem

• He complains about the timing in

England in winter and summer.
• He says that the day in winter is so
short that he goes to work in
darkness. On the other hand , the
summer day is so long
