Determine who are the leaders in
the case study?

 Jojo Tubao

 D1 Oil Philippines, Inc.

2 What do the
leaders
do?
What do the leaders do?

business/organization.

 Build relationship, leads and create transaction to other

business/organization.

Problem no. 1:
It takes time for tuba-tuba to mature.
 It affects the supply
 It affects the profit of the farmers
Proposed Solution:
 Small farmers can also have a other sources of income like
producing and nurturing other crops such as banana, mango and
sugarcane. It will take a five to nine months to harvest.

 Scheduled tuba-tuba planting and harvesting. Plan the planting of

tuba-tuba considering the years it can be harvested and mature to fill
the possible gaps in harvesting so that farmers will not be idled and
the production will be continuous.

Problem no. 2:
The cooperative didn’t use the opportunity to sell other
products made from tuba-tuba.
 There are many products that can be produced from tuba-tuba
which is stated in the case. This can be a source of additional
profit for the cooperative and the farmers.
Proposed Solution:

 Market the other use of tuba-tuba aside from its seed.

 Engage in creation of new products. Make a good use of the

available resources.

Problem no. 3:
Climate and weather disturbances.
 According to the Asian Disaster Reduction Center, the
Philippines is located along the typhoon belt in the Pacific where
it is visited by an average of 20 typhoons every year, five of
which are destructive.

 The tuba-tuba that takes up to 5 years to get harvested has no

guarantee that all the plants that have been planted will survive.
Proposed Solution:
 There are various technologies, such as irrigation, protected
cropping or greenhouses, poly-tunnels, etc., that can be used
to extend a crop’s growing season.

 Farmers should adapt to climate change by diversifying crop

rotations.

Problem no. 4:
Agreement between D1 Oil Philippines, Inc. and
Socsksargen Unifide Workers Multi-Purpose Cooperative
 The agreement is more beneficial to the company rather than the
cooperative.
 As the cooperative are more engaged in the propagation of the
plant, the D1 Oil Philippine, Inc. takes this opportunity to lessen
their cost in a way that they'll buy SEEDS in the cooperative well
in fact what they really need is the oil.
Proposed Solution:
 Instead of selling seeds or be a supplier of seeds, cooperative
should look into a bigger picture and get the best for them
without sacrificing the other party – both party should be
benefitted in the best way possible. Cooperative should
reconsider tuba-tuba oil extraction and make it as the product
they’ll sell to D1 Oil Philippines, Inc.
4 Relate the case to
the 4 lessons in unit
1
Unit 1 case relation
Business change is discussed in the Unit 1, it says that it
“should lead to the creation of goods or services that meet or even
exceed customer expectations.” It is cooperation between the
business and customer that creates a mutual benefit.
The cooperative should engage in change wherein they’ll able
to meet the needs of both its members or the cooperative itself
and the customer. Such as engaging in creation of products to
maximize the profit that the farmers/members can get and
promotes tuba-tuba propagation, and be able to supply the
customer the product they really need.

Unit 1 case relation
Lesson 2 - Jojo Tubao approaches to leadership as process. Process-
based leadership considers the relationship between leader and practice.
It is what leaders do that matters. Leadership is the process of
influencing the activities of an individual or a group in efforts toward
goal achievement in a given situation. It relates to what Tubao did as he
campaigned SUW-MPC to propagate tuba-tuba and signed agreement to
D1 Oil Philippines, Inc. From that, SUW-MPC would be able to do its
campaign and gain profit; that is goal achievement.

19
Case relation to cooperative
principles
Open and Voluntary Membership
 The propagation and campaign of tuba-tuba in General Santos City
was lead by the Socsksargen Unifide Workers Multi-Purpose
Cooperative. It consists different people who voluntary joined to
achieve a goal.
Democratic Member Control
 The tuba-tuba seeds are produced by SUW-MPC led by Jojo Tubao.
The members decided to have an agreement to a UK-based company
and engagement with D1 Oils PLC in regards of distribution of bio-
diesel from the tuba-tuba plants.

principles
Members' Economic Participation
 We believe all members of SUW-MPC have contributed equally for
the business of growing tuba-tuba.

Autonomy and Independence

 The SUW-MPC is an autonomous organization, therefore even
though the cooperative had agreements with other organizations or
companies, it comes with terms that ensures democratic control.

principles
Education, Training, and Information
 It is said that the tuba-tuba is a potential source of bio-diesel and
also used in making soaps, lubricants, and candles. Through the
campaign of the cooperative, farmers are encouraged to grow these
plants because it is easy to propagate and grows almost anywhere.

Cooperation Among Cooperatives

 By working with other cooperatives and organizations, the growing
of tuba-tuba that is led by SUW-MPC, bolster the local economy
and dealt with community needs.

23
Case relation to cooperative
principles
Concern for Community
 SUW-MPC worked for the sustainable development of the tuba-
tuba farmers community.
 As Mr. Tubao highlight that growing tuba-tuba is ideal for small
farmers, it is evident the he has a concern for the community –
both farmers and the community they are in. He shares his idea
and campaign, that farmers can take consideration. In the
Philippines, Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) also promotes
tuba-tuba planting to coconut farmers.
