The importance of grit and resilience

in times of uncertainty and adversity

Grit and Resilience

• Grit :
• Grit is about sustained, consistent effort toward a long-term goal even when we struggle, falter, or
temporarily fail.
• Resilience :
• Resilience is the process of being able to adapt well and bounce back quickly in times of stress.

Grit is the engine that moves us toward our goal. Resilience is the oil that keeps the engine moving.

When we demonstrate grit, it is because we have had the resilience to push ourselves over, through,
around, and sometimes under obstacles.
Importance of Grit and Resilience

• Grit is a driver of achievement and success. Without grit, talent may be nothing more than unmet
potential.

• Resilience
• Does not eliminate obstacles, difficulties, stress
• Helps to understand setbacks happen
• Gives strength to tackle problems, overcome adversity and move on.
• Enables to manage inevitable change
• It protects from the effects of stress
• It enhances productivity at work
Good news! Grit and resilience can be built and trained.

• Natural resilience
• Build resilience skills.
• “The only constant in life is change.” Accept it.
• Bad things will happen. Put adversities in a long life perspective.
• Be social (support network)
• Recognise signs of stress
• Develop a relaxation response
• Identify and use your strengths
• Positivity
Did you know that :
• Thomas Edison had to make 1,000 attempts before finally inventing the light bulb
• Animal Farm by George Orwell was rejected because there was no market for animal stories in the
USA back then.
• Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was rejected 12 times and J. K. Rowling was told “not to quit
her day job.”
• Disney was fired from the Kansas City Star newspaper in 1919 because, his editor said, he “lacked
imagination and had no good ideas.”
