WELCOME TO

MS.LIANG’S
MANDARIN CLASS
BY SHUANG LIANG
REASONS TO LEARN MANDARIN CHINESE
CELEBRATING
CHINESE NEW
YEAR !
• The annual Chinese New
Year is coming. Welcome
to experience the most
authentic Chinese New
Year in Ms. Liang’s
mandarin class.

• Traditional Chinese new

year
WEAR AND DECORATE
IN RED TO OUR PARTY.

In China, red is a symbol of

wealth and good luck. I
encourage everyone to wear
red and have good luck in
the new year. Red is also
seen as a weapon to scare
away monsters. So wear red
and come.
EAT DUMPLINGS
AND MANDARIN
ORANGES.
• Food and banquets are a
major part of the tradition. In
particular, Chinese people
will eat dumplings, a symbol
of leaving the old and
welcoming the new.
Likewise, oranges are eaten
because their gold represents
wealth. In my class party, I
will prepare dumplings and
welcome to taste it.
GIVING RED ENVELOPE
TO EVERYONE WITH
MON EY.
• At Lunar New Year, it's
tradition to give the gift
of a bright, beautiful red
envelope (known as 紅
包 , hóngbāo) to friends
and family. ...
The red color symbolizes
good luck and prosperity
in Chinese (and other
East Asian) cultures.
Everyone will get red
envelope from me.
DIY CHINESE
RED LANTERNS
• Celebrating Chinese New
Year without Chinese
lanterns is like being in a
house with no light. Made
of paper, the lantern,
called lampion here, is the
main focus of attention of
the celebration as it
symbolizes the wish for a
bright future. I will prepare
tools so that everyone can
make a red lantern by hand.

holiday is steeped in
symbolism, with names,
