ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT MANUAL & METHODOLOGY

TRANSFORMER WINDING RESISTANCE TEST
I. WINDING RESISTANCE TEST
A. Purpose: Transformer winding resistances are measured in the field to
check abnormalities such as loose connections, winding broken strands,
short circuited turns and high contact resistance in the tap changer.
B. Test Method:
B.1 Single Tap As-found Test ( Maintenance Test )
1. Verify that the transformer unit used to test is already de-energized.
2. Perform residual voltage checking and discharging.
3. Isolate all primary and secondary cables.
4. Gather and record nameplate data and as-found tap changer position
setting.
5. Preparation of the winding resistance tester and connects test probes as
describe in section C.2.
6. Turn on the test equipment.
7. Perform testing. The test equipment automatically identify the test current
to be injected, just set at auto mode. If the test result is not good at first
test, repeat it since sometimes the problem is in terminal and test probe
contact, please try to check.
8. Record or print the result.
9. Reconnect all cable connections. Applied torque tightening and marking.
10. Assistance in energization.
B.2 All Tap Test ( Site Acceptance Test )
11.Verify that the transformer unit used to test is already de-energized.
12.Perform residual voltage checking and discharging.
13.Isolate all primary and secondary cables.
14.Gather and record nameplate data and as-found tap changer position
setting.
15.Preparation of the winding resistance tester and connects test probes as
describe in section C.2.
16.Turn on the test equipment.
17.Perform testing. The test equipment automatically identify the test
current to be injected, just set at auto mode. If the test result is not good
at first test, repeat it since sometimes the problem is in terminal and test
probe contact, please try to check.
18.Record or print the result.
19.Repeat testing for other taps, same procedure above. Only secondary side
winding resistance to be tests because it is the only one varies when
changing the test position. Primary winding resistance is constant even
changing the tap position, so no need to test all taps.
20. Reconnect all cable connections. Applied torque tightening and marking.
21. Assistance in energization

TRANSFORMER WINDING RESISTANCE TEST

D. Standard Criteria

Result interpreted based on the comparison of each phase (line-

neutral) for wye winding and for each pair of terminal (line-line) for delta
winding. Comparison may also be made with the original as per factory test.
Difference of 5% is considered acceptable.

E. Standard Reference(s)
1. IEEE C62-1995 (R2005), Article 6.1.1, Page 7.
F. Precaution
2. Used a good 230 VAC power supply.
3. Do not test at open terminal and probes condition. Open circuit can
damage the test equipment.
4. During testing, do not allow any personnel touch bushings or terminals to
avoid electrocution.
5. Do not turn off immediately the test equipment once testing still ongoing.
6. Before removal test probes from transformer terminals during testing,
wait to finish discharging of the test equipment to avoid spark or
electrocution. Damage to the equipment is the result when disconnecting
while test is on-going.
7. As much as possible, avoid stepping on or press the test probes to avoid
damage and cutting off of wirings.
8. Clean the test equipment after use.
