A textual analysis

By
Soumik Hazra
Introduction:
• Mainstream Bollywood Cinema , now subsidized by a rural landscape,
speaking as if , their version of the neo-liberal narrative for the 1st
time.
• How the choice of setting involved gives the characters & the
narrative a distinct tone: separating & connecting with the grand
narrative of the changing nation
• The New age vagabond- Muslim travel celebrating the humanity &
mobility of the characters-the tragic despair & the yearning for
nostalgia. Ibn-E-Batuta and the new age cosmopolitanism.
• Rural space is no longer alienated from the urban space- The
characters located in periphery sublimates the age old rural values,
creating a shared social space.
• The evolution of a traditional Hindu house-wife:mythological allusions
& the breaking of stereotypes.
• The Subsequent Role reversal of a lone widow. The space subverting
its limit.
• The sense of Utopia lurking in bordered constraints:
• The Ambivalence and ambiguity of the setting. Caste war, Kidnapping,
lawlessness, domestic violence : being there , doing that.
• The unique blend of genres: femme fatale in the western landscape:
transforming the men with no past in men with hopes. Morricone in
the hinterlands.
Conclusion
This emergence of new directors and screenwriters from small towns
and villages , thereby helps subverting the space in a national context.
