“Installing Spread Offense at any level with No

Huddle Capability”

Mike Emendorfer

• The Spread Offense is designed to take advantage of your best athletes in open
space. Even if they are undersized and not overly quick, you can still create
favorable match-ups. With discipline, positioning and knowledge a coach can
utilize a player’s talents and feature players by doing a mixture of things.
• This offense is based on the thoughts of spreading the field by using spread
formations and shotgun. This makes the defense cover the entire field and brings a
pass first mentality from them. For these reasons the Spread Offense is an
effective way to run the football
• It is one of the best ways to feature an athletic quarterback who can run the
football. Because the defense is forced to cover the field, both horizontally and
vertically, your quarterback does not need great arm strength to be effective.
• Most of the throws involved in the Spread Offense are quick, simple throws and
employ a simple read progression. This eliminates a large amount of the complex
decision making.

1. You must commit to throw to uncovered receivers every time. The bubble concept
and play action bubble are great ways to do this. You must do whatever it takes to
make the linebackers play head up on your slots receivers. Don’t allow the
linebackers to be double edge players.
2. The line must take reasonable splits and be in a line but off the ball as far as the rules
allow.
3. You must work on the blitz everyday. You must have answers for the blitz, i.e.
Screens, Q Receiver, Quick Game, etc.
4. You must throw screens 7-10 times game. Within these plays you must have multiple
screens and plays working off screen actions.
5. Throw the ball short to your playmakers, understanding 50% of the yardage comes
after the catch.
6. Keep run game and protections schemes simple for the Linemen, so they have more
time to work on fundamentals.

7. Quarterbacks must be drilled to never pass up an open receiver hoping something
else may come open.
8. You must be willing to move the pocket, with a semi roll package or sprint out. This
changes rush lanes and gives the QB a new launching point, while allowing you to use
a 6 man protection
9. Run game must be simple but versatile enough to attack both inside and outside.
You must have simple schemes that can be run from multiple formations.
10. As the defense becomes more complex, you must become simpler in your schemes.
Don’t over coach the QB with ‘what ifs’.
11. Work on the shotgun snaps every day before and after practice. As well in the off-
season. This should be a focal point of the Center’s off season program.
12. Receivers must be taught to find open area while developing eye contact with the
Quarterback. They must understand sandboxes on the field, and not to play in
sandboxes of other receivers.

13. Everyone should be aware that “big” fumbles often occur at the end of “big” plays.
As a result, ball carriers must protect the ball when they’re fatigued and tackled.
14. You must finish a pass rusher when the defender gets into trouble. Bury him!
15. Receivers should run their pass routes decisively, as practiced. Disciplined depth and
position are vital. All routes in the game must be exactly as practiced
Slide 5Basics
Lineman
1. Alignment- should be off the LOS as far as rules allow.
2. Take reasonable big splits. Widens the defensive front and increases the distance to the QB.
3. Tackles stay up on the LOS. Don’t bow the line. It gives the DE a two way go. Make him go wide

Slots
1. Alignment so that the defender is forced to play run or pass but not both.
2. Know what WR is running and align so you can help

WR’s
1. See the ball snapped with the inside foot forward.
2. Align so you have room to work the sideline.
3. Know the Slots assignments so you can work together.
4. Don’t over split so QB can’t get you the ball.

QB’s
Align 4 ½ yards deep

RB
Align 5 yards deep, splitting the inside leg of the tackle
Offensive
Slide 7 Objectives
1. ATTACK: We will play a fast break, up-tempo attack. We will force each
opponent to react and adjust to our offense.
2. GATA: We will “GET AFTER THEIR ASS!” This is the cornerstone
principle of Platteville Football.
3. ELIMINATION OF SIW’s (Self Inflicted Wounds) : It’s tough enough to
beat your opponent. TURNOVER RATIO is the number one factor in
winning and losing college football games.
4. SCORE: The object of our offense is to score. We will score first, fast, and
we will finish the fourth quarter. We will maximize the Red Zone and we
will take advantage of every turnover that our defense creates by scoring
points.
5. TEAM: Foremost, we must become a true team. On and off the field, we
act as one, united as a whole group, where together we can accomplish
greatness.

“To win, you must do what everybody else does better than they do,
OR do something different than they do.”

Our style of play:

• Is a cohesive, aggressive system rooted in multiplicity,
yet built and learned simply.
• Creates MATCHUPS for both run and pass, allowing
our athletes to shine and our units to maintain the posture of
ATTACK.
• Is a complete toolbox that allows our program to take advantage of
all types and combinations of talent from year to year
without making wholesale changes.
• Is distinctive, exciting, creates problems and conflict for opp onents,
yet is rooted in fundamentals, discipline, and execution.

Different Looks for the Defense

• D-Line – Basic Run Game, 3 to 4 Protections,
Screens. Must upset tempo of DL
• Secondary – Different Formations, Motions,
Routes.
• Linebackers – Run Game, Play Action,
Screens, Drop-back.

• Alignment, Motion, and Shifts.
• Quick Game.
• Screen Game.

• **This forces defensive adjustments that help in protection

and in running game.
