Introduction • FAILURE TO WORK IN THE NORMAL CAPACITY. • THE ISSUE HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED AS A MAJOR PROBLEM AMONG HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS INCLUDING NURSES. • CAUSE- MISUSE OF DRUGS BY NURSES DURING THEIR CAREER. • OTHER CAUSES- FAMILY ISSUES, FATIGUE, POOR WORKING RELATIONSHIPS, MEDICAL COMPLICATIONS. • AMOUNTS OF SUBSTANCES ABUSED- IS SIMILAR WITH THAT OF THE GENERAL POPULATION • THE ISSUE IS CRITICAL AMONG NURSES AND HEALTHCARE WORKERS AS A RESULT OF THE ROLE OF PATIENT CARE PLAYED BY NURSES IN THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM. • HIGH AMONG NURSES AS A RESULT OF THE AMOUNT OF DRUGS THEY COME IN CONTACT WITH. Signs of impairment Behavioral or physical Types of Behavioral signs Increased absences, leaving early and reporting to work late. Dishonesty Increased errors in the line of duty Use of narcotic treatment on patients Evident elevated pain in patients Asking for money from patients Increased unaccountability for actions. Physical signs Physical signs- signs that can be physically identified from the affected individuals. The signs are Sleepiness Poor judgement Dilated pupils Mouth odor Mood changes Vomiting, nausea and diarrhea Tremors Slurred speech Intervention Program for Nurses (IPN).
A program that was established in 1984
The program was established after passage of a legislation. The program seeks to ensure the safety of practicing nurses that are unsafe to practice as a result of alcohol and substance abuse or as result of mental or physical conditions that affect practicing. IPN has a mission of providing holistic education through support and monitoring to the Nurses in Florida. Employer‘s Programs Employers have initiatives and programs to promote safety and offer assistance to impairment at the workplace. Provision of induction training- to help workers be aware of roles to avoid straining. Provision of information on potential hazards- to keep workers aware of the hazards in the workplace. Supervision- To keep an eye to avoid poor behavior or misuse. Development of reporting channels to help the reporting of misbehavior at the workplace. Identification programs- to help identify affected individuals at the workplace Treatment
A process that takes place over a period of time.
The process begins with the identification, reporting, intervention ,then to treatment. Evaluation depends on the amount of addiction. Patient is admitted. The patient is voluntarily enrolled for the impairment program. Limit practice as directed by the consultant managing the case.
