WHAT IS ABACUS

Abacus was an early calculating device which


used beads moving on strings. It used the idea of
place value and counting in groups. A bead
stands for one , ten or one hundred, etc.
depending upon the row it is in. It is also known
as SOROBAN.
HISTORY OF ABACUS

Abacus is a Latin word that has its origins in the Greek words
Abax or Abakan ( meaning “ table” or “ tablet” ) which in turn ,
possibly originated from the Semitic word abq, meaning sand 1.
In early times people uses their fingers & toes to count .
When the numbers got bigger , they used other items like
pebbles & twigs to count . Like this the abacus came into scene.
The abacus can divided into three ages : ancient times , middle
times , modern times . In each age different materials were used.
It is important to note that abacus are used for counting not
calculating like calculators we use today . The user of abacus
perform all the calculations in their head and use of abacus as a
physical aid to keep track of the sum and carry over.
