• How did this make you feel?

Problem Charge

A S

R Z
The Mission of the Field
Artillery is to…

DEFEAT,

DESTROY, OR DISRUPT

the enemy with integrated fires to enable maneuver

commanders to dominate in unified land operations.
Terminal Learning Objective

Action: Perform drivers duties during a M142

(HIMARS) reload

Conditions: Given in motor pool or field environment, a

HIMARS with expended ammunition,
Reload Point (RP) with LP/C and a crew

Standards: Perform reload procedures IAW IETM 9-

1055-1646-13&P. All steps must be
performed in order, and complete the task
without injury to personnel or
damage to equipment
Risk Assessment

Assessment: Low

Controls: Observation of warnings and brief the students

about situational awareness and moving vehicle/parts
hazards prior to moving them to the maintenance bay

Considerations: Severe Weather, Tripping Hazards,

Blocked exits, Leaning back in chairs, Fires, Electrical
Shock, Active Shooter

Leader Actions: Enforce all safety standards developed on

the DRAW Worksheet
Environmental Considerations

• It is the responsibility of all Soldiers and DA civilians to

protect the environment from damage

• Environmental considerations will be consistent with

post regulations/unit SOP

• Prevention or minimization of waste

• Use of recycled products and recycling facilities

• Energy conservation in buildings and use of equipment

Evaluation

This lesson is tested during GH6020 Date /Time

(Hands-on examination)
Enabling Learning Objective

Action: Discuss the Theory of Operations for Reload

Conditions: Given in classroom, motor pool/field

environment, Power Point slides

Standards: Soldiers will familiarize themselves with theory

of operation, reload point setup, and
limitations of the M142 HIMARS during reload
operations
Reload Theory of Operations

1. Reload System

a. The reload operation is performed using a software routine and built

in re-loader that enables the crew to reload ammunition

b. The reload operation is initiated using the Universal Fire Control

System

c. The launcher’s Reload System (RS) is incorporated into the design

of the Firing Platform and Platform Assembly

d. The RS is located over the top of the LP/C or GMLA and does not
impede in C-130 aircraft loading/off loading

e. The M142 use hydraulic motors to power both the boom and hoist
motor
Reload Theory of Operations
2. Reload System

a. The reload operation is initiated using the Universal Fire Control

System (UFCS) RELOAD PFK and begins with the crew obtaining
and driving to a reload location

b. The launcher’s Reload System is incorporated into the design of the

Firing Platform and Platform Assembly

c. It consists of a boom and hoist assembly similar to that on the

M270A1 MLRS launcher. The RS is located over the top of the LP/C
or GMLA and does not impede in C-130 aircraft loading/off loading

d. The M142 uses hydraulic motors to power both the boom and hoist
motor. The boom and hoist are controlled from the Boom Controller
(BC) by the operator
Reload Theory of Operations

3. Reload Point (RP)

Select RPs based on the following conditions:

a. Cover and concealment for a RSV/RST and launcher in the position
at the same time
b. Maneuver room for the RSV/RST w/boom operations and room for
the HIMARS crew to traverse the LM safely (Safety zone is 4 meters to
the side and 6.4 meters to the rear during reload)
c. Located at least 800 meters from FPs and at least 500 meters from
any other element

d. Firm level ground or pavement for supporting vehicles and launch

pods (no greater than 89 mils)

e. Traffic ability
Reload Theory of Operations

The following are additional RP considerations for the M142 launcher:

• The RP must allow the HIMARS to download and upload without re-
parking

• The RP should enable the HIMARS to drive forward into position,

reload and drive forward to exit the RP (a drive through RP is preferred
rather than a RP that requires the launcher to back up)

If all available launchers fire on a schedule, a temporary loss of a Fire

Support asset (up to 20 to 45 minutes) can be expected while the
launchers move to reload points, reload, and return to firing points
Reload Theory of Operations

3. M142 Reload Limitations

The reload zone for HIMARS is restricted to 3200 mils (180 degrees) +/-
389 mils (+/-22 degrees) from the centerline of the vehicle cab. This
reload zone defines the limits within which the heaviest pod may be
hoisted on fully-extended booms with the vehicle parked on a maximum
89 mils (5 degree) reload slope at the worst orientation

This orientation is when the vehicle centerline is parked uphill from the
pod and is at right angles to the slope of the terrain. This reload zone
preserves a 30 percent roll stability margin for the launcher, which
means that 18.75% of the vehicle's total weight is still being carried by
the uphill wheels. Boom and hoist operations outside of this zone are
not possible

Reload Preparation/Setup
Reload Point/Setup
1. Four Abreast Pod Placement

A successful RP is one that allows the launcher to easily access,

reload and move to another position (HA, FP, etc) in the most
expedient manner
The RP may be expanded to include up to 8 LP/C GMLAs
Two launchers could reload simultaneously from this RP, one on either
side. The full LP/C GMLA are placed approximately three feet apart with
their forward end facing the direction from which the M142 launcher
drives through the RP. The 3 feet separation is not a critical distance but
is sufficient to allow crews to safely reload without interference

The ammunition crews must prepare the RP so the launcher will not
violate the 89-mil slope requirement. If the launcher cannot maintain the
89-mil slope requirement, the RP will not be usable. LP/C GMLA will not
be stacked at the RP because the M142 launcher cannot load stacked
LP/C GMLA without the use of jury struts

2. Four In-Line Pod Placement

The RSV/RST approaches from the direction opposite of that which

the launcher approaches. After emplacing the first two LP/C GMLAs,
the RSV/RST must be driven forward and re-parked to place the third
and fourth LP/C GMLA

The next slide displays a RP established along a road or trail.

Full LP/C GMLAs are placed approximately five feet apart, all facing
the direction from which the M142 launcher approaches.

To prevent damage to the hoist assembly and/or to the LP/C GMLA, do

not drag the LP/C or GMLA

Never attempt to lift the LP/C GMLA if the hoist hook and pulley
assembly is not positioned close to the lifting bar

When the LP/C GMLA are on the ground, the maximum distance allowed
is the width of the hoist hook and pulley assembly

This distance is decreased to zero if the LP/C GMLA is lifted from a

resupply vehicle or trailer

•How do you foresee you using what you learned in the

future?

•Does this have value?

Conduct HIMARS Reload
(Practical Exercise)

• Review hand signals, BC controls and safety measures with

Soldiers.

• Supervise Soldiers performing M142 HIMARS reload operations.

WARNING: Except for Soldiers occupying the launcher cab, Soldiers

will not occupy an area within four (4) meters (13.1 feet) of the launcher
module (LM) or within 6.4 meters (21 feet) of the rear of the LM when
the hydraulic control system (HCS) is activated, unless required during
reload procedures.
