Words
• A paraphrase is your own rendition of essential
information and ideas expressed by someone else.
• A paraphrase is one legitimate way (when accompanied
by accurate documentation) to borrow from a source.
• A paraphrase is a detailed restatement, which focuses
concisely on a single main idea.
Paraphrasing Tips

• When paraphrasing, try to understand the original phrase


or sentence/s completely.
• After understanding it completely, try to put it away or
don’t take a look at it and try to restate it or rewrite it in
your own words.
• Then check your paraphrase and compare it with the
original source to see if you’ve included or pointed out all
the main points.
Examples
Original: The neighbor’s dogs were barking when I brought my bone-like
friend to my house.

Main points: neighbor’s dogs; barking; bone-like friend; house

Paraphrase 1: When I went back home with my skinny friend, the dogs of my
neighbor barked at us.

Paraphrase 2: The dogs of my neighbor started to bark when they saw me


with my very thin friend entering to my house.

provide their information needs and purposes.
