Natural and Synthetic Polymers

Introduction

What is Polymers?
-substance consisting of large molecules
that are made of many small, repeating units
called monomers, or mers. Because of their
broad range of properties, both synthetic and
natural polymers play an essential and
ubiquitous role in everyday life.

Polymers range from familiar synthetic

plastics such as polystyrene to
natural biopolymers such
as DNA and proteins that are fundamental to
biological structure and function. Polymers,
both natural and synthetic, are created
via polymerization of many small molecules,
known as monomers.
Natural and Synthetic Polymers

What is Natural Polymers?

-these are the polymers obtained from
natural resources, and are generally non-toxic.
Natural polymers are formed in nature
during the growth cycles of all organisms.
NATURAL POLYMERS

PROTIENS POLYSACCHARIDES

Eg: COLLAGEN Eg: CHITIN

CARTELAGE STARCH
KERATIN CELLULOSE
LATEX

What is Synthetic Polymers?

-are artificial origin which consist of
fibers like Teflon and Dacron, Synthetic
Rubbers, Plastics and PVC
-through scientific research, scientist are
able to copy the structures of natural polymers
to produce synthetic polymers.
