Why read literature? To many of us, that question seems as strange
as asking “why breathe?” Literature has been part of our life,
family, school, and community for as long as we can remember.
Literature offers windows to worlds outside. as well as mirrors onto
the world they already know. Literature also prepares students for
the personal challenges and moral dilemmas they are likely to face
(Barnet). When in literature, an author can go many ways in their
writing, such as: romance, comedy, horror and gothic literature.

One of the best well-known gothic author’s is
Edgar Allen Poe. Gothic literature is described as
a genre that combines both elements of horror
and romance. The effects of Gothic literature
feeds on compelling the idea of terror, an
extension of Romantic literary.

My name is James Amir A. Florendo, And For

today I Will be Discussing All About The Life Of

Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer, poet, editor, and literary critic.
Poe is best known for his poetry and short stories, particularly his tales of
mystery and the macabre. He is widely regarded as a central figure of
Romanticism in the United States and of American literature as a whole,
and he was one of the country's earliest practitioners of the short story.
He is also generally considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre
and is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science
fiction.[1] Poe was the first well-known American writer to earn a living
through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career.

Edgar Allen Poe was abandoned by his father when he was ten and his
mother died when he was eleven. This was most likely the beginning of
the decline of his mental thought processes. The poverty, rejection and
neglect that Poe experienced had major psychological effects on his
personality. Poe was delusional, confused and void of natural emotions.
In today’s psychological circles it is likely that Poe would be thought to
suffer from Manic-Depressive Bipolar disorder. He was a disturbed
individual and the disturbances are reflected in the darkness of his
writings.

“As Stated earlier, Poe is known primarily for his mastery of the Gothic genre .
Poe's short stories "The Fall of the House of Usher" and "Ligeia" are both classic
examples of the genre.” (Canada) Poe’s gothic writings were scary fantasies that
demanded the reader to participate in the terror.

According to Dictionary.com, death is defined as the termination or
extinction of something. Edgar Allen Poe used this definition all
throughout his story, "The Fall of the House of Usher". After reading
the story several times to try to pick up on any thoughts or emotions
Poe intended the reader to grasp, I found that unlike most stories, E.
A. Poe had no idea of a moral or an idea of reason behind the story
of the House of Usher. Under my impression, he wrote this story to
scare the living out of people. So...why and how does Edgar Allen
Poe scare people even to this day with "The Fall of the House of
Usher"?

Despite Poe’s preference for his poetry, it is the tales, with their leisure
to linger over thoughts, that have most impressed subsequent readers.
Poe’s modern appeal derives most from his ability to give an almost
palpable immediacy to abstract questions about will, choice, and
personality. Psychoanalytic readers rightly see his explorations of the
mental as a kind of proto-psychology, although one concerned more with
otherness than with unconsciousness, more with Locke than with Freud.
Post-modernists correctly sense that his disinterest in characters or
plots avoids the presence and subjectness that prevent the free play of
meaning in traditional writing. For Poe, however, problems of identity did
not originate in consciousness but resulted from the foreignness of the
environment in which mentality found itself. Minds did not imagine
horrors but saw clearly the horribleness of their universe.

Traditionally viewed as apathetic or even conservative, Poe
was in fact intensely political. He rarely focused on
specific events, although his allusions to cholera and to the
California Gold Rush did challenge the territorial and class
assumptions of his generation. More commonly, Poe
explored what we have come to call the politics of
knowledge—the ways in which the act of knowing
structures and controls what can be known.

Readers were wrong to focus on the cleverness of the
stories. ‘Where’, Poe wondered, ‘is the ingenuity of
unraveling a web which you yourself [the author] have
woven for the express purpose of unraveling?’ Far from
an unambiguous elucidation of Truth, detection was for
Poe merely a specialized way of thinking, and one
somewhat at odds with the epistemologies of the other
tales.

When describing Poe in terms of the
Five-Factor Model of personality we can conclude
that he would be high on Neuroticism – evident by
the constant nervous anxiety he was said to have,
as well as his melancholy and irritability. Poe would
also be described as being low in Agreeableness and
Conscientiousness since he was argumentative,
untrusting, and lacked self-control.
