~QUESTION 1~
QUESTION 1
Amy and Judy sold 12 show
tickets altogether. Amy sold 2
more tickets than Judy. How
many tickets did each girl sell?
According to polya’s model,
The steps involved are:
i) Understanding the problem
ii) Devise a plan
iii)Carry out the plan
iv)Look back
STEP 1 : UNDERSTANDING
PROBLEM
Data:
The sum of tickets that are sold by Amy and
Judy is 12
Amy sold 2 more tickets than Judy
Condition :
 What do we need to find?

We need to know that 12 tickets were sold in

all. We also need to know that Amy sold 2
more tickets than Judy.
STEP 2 : DEVISING PLAN
a) Guess and check

b) Make a table
STEP 3 : CARRY OUT THE PLAN
Method 1 : GUESS AND CHECK
Identify the problem
Condition :
 What do we need to find?
The number of tickets sold by Amy and
Judy
We have to know that 12 tickets were
sold in all by Amy and Judy. We also
need to know that Amy sold 2 more
tickets than Judy.
Devise guess and check plan
 How can we solve the problem????????

 We can guess and check to find two

numbers with a sum of 12 and a
difference of 2.

 If our first guess does not work, try with

two different numbers and so on.
Carry out the plan
SOLVE:
First Guess:
Amy = 8 tickets
Judy = 4 ticket
Check
8 + 4 = 12
8 - 4 = 4 ( Amy sold 4 more tickets)
These numbers do not work!
Second Guess:
Amy = 7 tickets
Judy = 5 tickets
Check
7 + 5 = 12
7- 5 = 2 ( Amy sold 2 more tickets)
These numbers do work!
Amy sold 7 tickets and Judy sold 5 tickets
Looking back
Examine the solution obtained.
Guess that Amy sold 7 tickets and Judy sold 5.Thus total
number of tickets are 12 and its difference is 2.It is right
answer.
Can we check the result????
Amy = 7 tickets
Judy = 5 tickets
7 + 5 = 12
7- 5 = 2 (Difference of two number which is 7 and 5 are 2)
( Amy sold 2 more tickets than Judy)
Thus the answer is 7 number of tickets sold by Amy and 5
number of tickets sold by Judy
METHOD 2 : MAKE A TABLE
Identify the problem
 What do we need to find?

We need to know that 12 tickets

were sold in all. We also need to
know that Amy sold 2 more tickets
than Judy.
Devise make a table plan
How can we solve the problem???????
 We can make a table to solve this problem. List
the two numbers with a sum of 12 and a
difference of 2.
 Based on the table, we need to justify what is
the possibilities the number of tickets that are
sold by Amy and Judy.
 Remember that Amy sold 2 tickets than Judy.
Carry out the plan
Number of tickets Number of tickets Sum of the two Difference of the
that are sold by that are sold by numbers two numbers
Amy Judy
1 11 12 10
2 10 12 8
3 9 12 6
4 8 12 4
5 7 12 2
6 6 12 0
7 5 12 2
8 4 12 4
9 3 12 6
10 2 12 8
11 1 12 10
12 0 12 12
From the table…….
 The sum of 7 and 5 or 5 and 7 are 12 and its
difference is 2.
 Thus, 7 and 5 are the number of tickets that
are sold by Amy and Judy.
 Remember that Amy sold 2 tickets more than
Judy
 Hence, the number of tickets sold by Amy are
7 and the number of tickets sold by Judy are 5
Looking back
 Examine the solution obtained.
From the table, the sum of the two numbers 7 and 5 is 12 and its
differences is 2. Amy sold 2 tickets more than Judy. Thus, the
number of tickets sold by Amy is 7 and Judy sold 5 tickets.
 Can we check the result????
Amy = 7 tickets
Judy = 5 tickets
7 + 5 = 12
7- 5 = 2 (Difference of two number which is 7 and 5 are 2)
( Amy sold 2 more tickets than Judy)
Thus the answer is 7 number of tickets sold by Amy
and 5 number of tickets sold by Judy
JUSTIFICATION
By using both of the two strategies, we ended
with the same answer which is 7 number of
tickets sold by Amy and 5 number of tickets sold
by Judy.
Use guess and check method is the best way to
solve Question 1 compared with use make a table
method.This because:
 It is more efficient
 It is more systematic
 Easy for student to understand
 Not complicated
 It is more simple

~QUESTION 2~
Aemy was very overweight and his doctor told
him to lose 36 kg. If he loses 11 kg the first
week, 9 kg the second week, and 7 kg the
third week, and he continues losing at this
rate, how many weeks will he take to lose 36
kg?
ACCORDING TO POLYA’S MODEL,
THE STEPS INVOLVED ARE:

 Understanding the problem

 Devise a plan
 Carry out the plan
 Look back
STEP 1 :
UNDERSTAND
THE PROBLEM
INFORMATION GIVEN:
0 How much does the Aemy need to
lose?
= 36 kg
0 How much did he lose the first week?
= 11 kg
0 How much did he lose the second
week?
= 9 kg
0 How much did he lose the third week?
= 7 kg
STEP 2 :
DEVISE A PLAN
STEP 3 :
CARRY OUT THE
PLAN
METHOD 1 :
MAKE A
TABLE
o Firstly, make a table to know the
different of kilogram lost between a
week
o From the table, we know
Week Kilogram Different that, Aemy will lose 2 kg
Lost At Of per week from the first
That Kilogram week until the third week
Week Lost o Thus, he will lose 2 kg per
(kg) Between week continuously until
A Week the week he lose about 36
(kg) kg such the doctor had
1 11 0 suggested
2 9 11-9 = 2

3 7 9-7 = 2
o Secondly, make a table to know how
many weeks will he takes to lose
about 36 kg
Week Kilogram Total
Lost For Kilogram
That lose o From the table, we
Week From The
(kg) First know that Aemy will
Week
(kg) lose about 36 kg at
1 11 11 the sixth week.
2 11-2 = 9 11+9 = 20
3 9-2 = 7 20+7 = 27
4 7-2 = 5 27+5 = 32
5 5-2 = 3 32+3 = 35
6 3-2 = 1 35+1 = 36
STEP 4 :
LOOKING BACK
o From the 1st table we done, we know
that Aemy lost 2 kg every week by find
the difference of weight lost between a
week

o At the 1st week he lost 11 kg

o At the 2nd week he lost = 11-2

= 9 kg

o At the 3rd week he lost = 9-2

= 7 kg
o At the 4th week he lost = 7-2
= 5 kg

o At the 5th week he lost = 5-2

= 3 kg

o At the 6th week he lost = 3-2

= 1 kg
o Then, we total up the weight lost from
the first week until the week that Aemy
lost 36 kg

o At the 1st week he lost 11 kg

o The total weight lost at = 11+9

2nd week = 20 kg

o The total weight lost at = 20+7

3rd week = 27
o The total weight lost at = 27+5
4th week =32

o The total weight lost at = 32+3

5th week = 35

o The total weight lost at = 35+1

6th week = 36

o Thus, Aemy lost 36 kg at the 6th

week
STEP 1 :
UNDERSTAND
THE PROBLEM
INFORMATION GIVEN:
0 How much does the Aemy need to
lose?
= 36 kg
0 How much did he lose the first week?
= 11 kg
0 How much did he lose the second
week?
= 9 kg
0 How much did he lose the third week?
= 7 kg
STEP 2 :
DEVISE A PLAN
STEP 3 :
CARRY OUT THE
PLAN
METHOD 2 :
LOOK FOR A
PATTERN
o Firstly,
we need to find a
pattern he lose a weight for
every week
1st week 2nd week 3rd week
11 9 7

+2 +2

o Thus, the pattern of Aemy will lose his

weight every week is 2 kg
o Secondly,we need to find the
week that he will lose about 36 kg
by adding all the kilogram lose
each a week from the first week
Week 1 2 3 4 5 6

Kilogram 11 9 7 5 3 1
lost for that
week
-2 -2 -2 -2 -2

Total 11 20 27 32 35 36
kilogram lost
from the
first week +9 +7 +5 +3 +1
o From this pattern, we will
see that at the sixth week
Aemy will lose about 36 kg
as the doctor suggested
STEP 4 :
LOOKING BACK
o From the informatin given, we know
that the pattern that Aemy lost his
weight is 2 kg
o At the 1st week he lost 11 kg
o At the 2nd week he lost 9 kg

Thus, the total weight lost = 11+9

from the 1st week = 20kg
o At the 3rd week he lost 7 kg

Thus, the total weight lost = 20+7

from the 1st week = 27 kg
o At the 4th week he lost 5 kg
Thus, the total weight lost = 27+5
from the 1st week = 32 kg
o At the 5th week he lost 3 kg

Thus, the total weight lost = 32+3

from the 1st week = 35 kg
o At the 6th week he lost 1 kg

Thus, the total weight lost = 35+1

from the 1st week = 36 kg
o Lastly,when we total up
the weight lost from the
first week until the week
that Aemy lost 36 kg we
get that Aemy lost 36 kg at
the 6th weeks
JUSTIFICATION
o From the two methods we hade done, the final answer
that we get from both methods is same that is Aemy
lost his weight about 36 kg at the 6th week
o Despite that, we had found that the 2nd method that is
look for a pattern is much easy to solve this question
o By using this method, student will easy to understand
and determine the pattern to get the final answer
o This method is simple and not complicated
DIFFICULTIES
