Guides in our life must

be understood as
positive response to the
challenge of keeping
the loving relationship.
Clearly, this signals a
paradigm shift from the
negative sense of the
imperatives as
burdensome obligations to
keep.
Instead these guides must
be seen as responsible acts
of freedom in the context
of the Covenant as loving
relationship.

CHRISTIAN MORALITY

The morality for Christians

considers the presence of a “SIGN”
which gives out guidelines to
follow.
10 Commandments

Basic Knowledge:
• Given by God to Moses
• Given in Mt. Sinai after they
escaped from Egypt
10 Commandments

Note:
• Needed at their time since the
People of God had the tendency
to rebel
• All through out the TORAH the
commandments were added.
1st COMMANDMENT

“I AM THE LORD YOUR GOD,

THOU SHALL NOT HAVE
OTHER GODS BEFORE ME”
1st COMMANDMENT

CONTEXT: The Jews even after

being saved were still worshipping
different gods on their way towards
the promised land. (e.g. Golden
Calf)
1st COMMANDMENT

PURPOSE:
Unify everyone in God’s name.
2nd COMMANDMENT

“THOU SHALL NOT TAKE THE

NAME OF THE LORD, YOUR
GOD IN VAIN”
2nd COMMANDMENT

CONTEXT: During their time,

people extort money and properties
in the guise and name of God. But
the God of righteousness does not
desire such behaviors.
2nd COMMANDMENT

PURPOSE:
The proper use of His name. For
Worship, Prayer, Thanksgiving, not
for self-service designed especially
to trample others.
3rd COMMANDMENT

REMEMBER TO KEEP HOLY

THE SABBATH DAY
3rd COMMANDMENT

CONTEXT: During the Jewish

time, people have no time to gather,
reflect and develop a sense of
community. By keeping busy all
throughout the week, they have
forgotten who saved them.
3RD COMMANDMENT

PURPOSE:
By offering one day of rest, people
would be more appreciative of what
has been done not only for that
week but in a broad perspective.
4TH COMMANDMENT

“HONOR THY FATHER AND

MOTHER”
4TH COMMANDMENT

CONTEXT: The Israelites consider

the wisdom as the gift of old age.
The fourth commandment is to
continue and uphold this tradition.
4TH COMMANDMENT

PURPOSE:
It urges us to honor, respect and
protect the basic unit of society and
the authority figures.
5TH COMMANDMENT

“THOU SHALL NOT COMMIT

MURDER”
5TH COMMANDMENT

CONTEXT:
During those times, showing your
force and instilling fear by
demonstration keeps people in line.
5TH COMMANDMENT

PURPOSE:
To discontinue the needless
violence and promote peace and
harmony within the community.
6TH COMMANDMENT

“THOU SHALL NOT COMMIT

ADULTERY”
6TH COMMANDMENT

DEFINITION
• ADULTERY – the sin of a
MARRIED person having sexual
relationships other than their
spouse.
6TH COMMANDMENT

CONTEXT
The story of unfaithfulness is
nothing new and it was evident
even in those times. The gravity of
the offence differs if you are a man
or woman.
6TH COMMANDMENT

PURPOSE
To teach the people to be faithful
with the covenant made between
the couple just like how God wants
his covenant be kept.
7TH COMMANDMENT

“THOU SHALL NOT STEAL”

7TH COMMANDMENT

CONTEXT
Slavery was a big thing in the past.
It withholds the person from its
freedom just because of their lowly
status and lack of wealth.
7TH COMMANDMENT

PURPOSE
To prevent another person from
robbing his fellow freeman of his
freedom.
8TH COMMANDMENT

“THOU SHALL NOT BEAR

FALSE WITNESS AGAINST THY
NEIGHBOR”
8TH COMMANDMENT

CONTEXT
During their time, there was already
a consciousness of justice and
freedom. The simplest of lies can
set an innocent person behind bars.
8TH COMMANDMENT

PURPOSE
To set the people on the path
towards truth and justice.
9TH and 10TH COMMANDMENT

“THOU SHALL NOT COVET

THY NEIGHBORS WIFE”
And
“THOU SHALL NOT COVET
THY NEIGHBORS GOODS”
9TH and 10TH COMMANDMENT

CONTEXT
Even then people have no complete
hold of their inordinate desires.
9TH and 10TH COMMANDMENT

PURPOSE
To be conscious of the possibility of
breaking the harmonious
relationship one has with the
community.
CHRIST’S COMMANDMENT

For Christ, the Laws and the Commandments boils down to

two things:

LOVE GOD LOVE OTHERS

(Commandments 1-3) (Commandments 4-10)
CHRIST’S COMMANDMENTS

It is useless to know of the

commandments if the essence of
each of the commandments would
not be highlighted.
