TORSION PENDULUM

AIM

To determine the moment of inertia of the a given Disc by torsional oscillations and to calculate the
rigidity modulus of the suspension wire.

Apparatus FORMULA

• Circular disc Moment of Inertia,

• Stop clock I0 = {2m(d22 – d12)To2} / {T22 – T12} Kgm2
•Screw gauge
•Suspension wire
• Identical cylindrical mass Rigidity Modulus

G = {8 I0 l / r To } N/m
4 2 2

FLOW CHART OF MEASUREMENT

Fig.1 Fig.2 Fig.3

PROCEDURE
1. Measure the length l of the suspension wire.
2. Standing in front of the pendulum ,gently set in torsional oscillations
3. Note the time for 20 oscillations. Find the period of oscillations To
4. Then place two identical masses symmetrically on either side of suspension wire and measure
the distance d1. (Ref. Fig.2).
5. Then set in torsional oscillations and Note the time for 20 oscillations. Find the period of
oscillations T1.
6. Place two identical masses symmetrically on either side of suspension wire and measure the
distance d2. (Ref. Fig.3).
7. Again set in torsional oscillations and Note the time for 20 oscillations. Find the period of
oscillations T2 .
RESULTS

•The Moment of inertia of the circular disc I 0 = ………….. Kg m 2

•The Rigidity modulus of the suspension wire G = …………… N/m2
