INTRODUCTION

2
• University Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology aspires  to
become the premier aviation training institution specialising in aircraft
maintenance technology

• Gas Turbine Engine. – Aiming to provide the students with the fundamental
construction of the engine, the operation, maintenances, and various system of
turbine engine and its related components.

PROBLEM STATEMENTS

8
• Today method is not a suitable method
because it is not been apply in real life
situation.

• UniKL MIAT does not has an appropriate tool

to remove and install HS 125 engine in its
hangar

• The cost of buying the tool is very high

9
PURPOSE &
OBJECTIVE

10
• To redesign the sling
•To reduce the cost of owning the tool
•To recommend the tool to UniKL MIAT for next
generation of students to use in order to improve
the learning process for educational purposes.

LITERATURE REVIEW

12
According Mahmoud M. Farag. Materials and Process Selection for Engineering
Design (2008)

Engineering design work is usually performed on three different levels :-

1. Development of existing products or designs, redesign, by

introducing minor modifications in size, shape, or materials to
improve performance or to overcome difficulties in production.
This type of work represents a large proportion of the design
effort in industry and may be accompanied by failure analysis
to reduce the likelihood of further failure.

According to George E. Dieter (1997). "Overview of the Materials Selection

Process", ASM Handbook Volume 20: Materials Selection and Design.

The main goal of material selection is to minimize cost while meeting

product performance goals

Weight When Lifting The Approx 900lb (408.23kg)
Engine (using statimeter)

15
According to the WBParts.Inc, the company will sell the sling to its customers
for $25,023.60 through their website at http://www.wbparts.com.

The amount above is equal to RM 79,037.04

16
Chemical composition is combination of materials at the atomic level. It is the
identities and relative numbers of the elements that make up any particular
compound

17
Mechanical properties are defined by characteristics such as strength,
hardness, and ductility. There are usually measured based on the amount of
stress or force it takes to break or tear a material

CONCLUSION

29
• Because of limited information resources from the manufacturer drawing , I’m
facing difficulties to redesign the sling. At this moment, I just managed to finish
the sketching drawing without the correct dimensions. It will be more helpful if the
drawing is more clear.

• In order to analyze the cost of my project, I have to find the material to replace
the original material and can produce lower cost than that. At this moment, I just
found out 7 material that have similar material properties as s92 carbon
manganese steel :-
• AISI 1024
• SAE 1024
• AISI 1027
• SAE 1027
• WS1.5065
• 150M19
• EN14A

• As soon as I find the cost of each material and adding to the cost to make the
sling, the suitable material will be decided.
