DEVELOPMENT
1. PERSONALITY- THE SET OF EMOTIONAL QUALITIES, WAYS OF BEHAVING, ETC., THAT MAKES A PERSON
DIFFERENT FROM OTHER PEOPLE.
2. PERSONAL- BELONGING OR RELATING TO A PARTICULAR PERSON.
3. DEVELOPMENT- THE PROCESS OF GROWING OR CAUSING SOMETHING TO GROW OR BECOME LARGER OR MORE
ADVANCED. THIS IS ASSOCIATED WITH QUALITATIVE CHANGE WHILE “GROWTH” PER SE IS ASSOCIATED WITH
QUANTITATIVE CHANGE.
4. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT- THE PROCESS OF STRIVING TO BE THE BEST THAT YOU CAN BE IN ORDER TO REACH AND
REALIZE YOUR FULL POTENTIAL. IT IS A JOURNEY TO SELF DISCOVERY, SELF IMPROVEMENT, AND SELF REALIZATION.
5. ADOLESCENCE- THE PERIOD BETWEEN CHILDHOOD AND ADULTHOOD. IT STARTS WITH THE BIOLOGICAL CHANGES CALLED
PUBERTY.
5.1 EARLY ADOLESCENCE- BETWEEN 10 AND 13 YEARS OF AGE.
5.2 MIDDLE ADOLESCENCE- BETWEEN 14 AND 16 YEARS OF AGE.
5.3 LATE ADOLESCENCE- BETWEEN 17 AND 20 YEARS OF AGE.
6. PSYCHOLOGY- STUDY OF HUMAN THINKING AND BEHAVIOR; SERVES AS A FOUNDATION FOR PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT.
7. CARL ROGERS- ONE OF THE PROPONENTS OF HUMANISTIC PSYCHOLOGY. HE THEORIZED THAT “THE INDIVIDUAL HAS
WITHIN HIMSELF THE CAPACITY AND THE TENDENCY LATENT IF NOT EVIDENT, TO MOVE FORWARD TOWARDS MATURITY”.
8. ABRAHAM MASLOW- ANOTHER PROPONENT OF HUMANISTIC PSYCHOLOGY. HE THEORIZED THE FIVE
STAGES OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT BASED ON A HIERARCHY OF NEEDS WHICH INCLUDES
PHYSIOLOGICAL (FOOD, CLOTHING, SHELTER), SAFETY OR SECURITY, LOVE OR BELONGINGNESS, ESTEEM, AND
SELF-ACTUALIZATION (DEVELOPING OUR FULL POTENTIAL).
9. THE THREE ASPECTS OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT: PHYSICAL (BODY), COGNITIVE (BRAIN), AND PSYCHOSOCIAL
(BEHAVIOR AND RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS).
10. THE THREE FACTORS AFFECTING OR INFLUENCING HUMAN DEVELOPMENT: HEREDITY(GENETIC MAKEUP OR
NATURE), ENVIRONMENT (NURTURE), AND MATURATION (NATURAL PROCESS OF BEING AND BECOMING).
11. SPIRITUAL AND RELIGIOUS BELIEFS INFLUENCE PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT. FORMATION OF PERSONAL
IDENTITY INCLUDES ATTITUDES ABOUT RELIGION.
12. HOLISM- ABOUT SEEING THINGS AS A WHOLE AND AS SOMETHING THAT IS BIGGER THAN THE SUM OF ITS
PARTS . THIS SPEAKS OF SEEING TO THE TOTALITY (HOLISTIC) OF THE PERSON TO UNDERSTAND HIM OR HER.
13. THE FIVE ASPECTS OF A WHOLE PERSON:
• PHYSIOLOGICAL- PHYSICAL BODY
• COGNITIVE- THINKING PROCESS
• PSYCHOLOGICAL- WAY OF THINKING, FEELING AND BEHAVING
• SOCIAL- RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHER PEOPLE
• SPIRITUAL-THE HIGHER IDEALS, BELIEF AND VALUES OF A PERSON ADHERES
14. SELF- THE COGNITIVE AND AFFECTIVE REPRESENTATION OF ONE’S IDENTITY; THE ESSENCE OF A PERSON.
15. EMOTIONS- USUALLY CAUSED BY PHYSICAL SENSATION EXPERIENCED BY THE BODY AS A REACTION TO A
CERTAIN EXTERNAL STIMULUS.
16. FEELINGS- THE RESULT FROM THE EMOTIONS THAT WERE EXPERIENCED.
17. ATTITUDES- INCLUDES PERSON’S THOUGHTS, FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS ABOUT ANOTHER PERSON, OBJECT,
IDEA, BEHAVIOR, OR SITUATION.
18. ERIK ERIKSON’S EIGHT STAGES OF PSYCHOSOCIAL DEVELOPMENT:
* INFANCY (0-18 MONTHS)- TRUST VS. MISTRUST (PARENTS MOST ESPECIALLY THE MOTHER)
* EARLY CHILDHOOD (18 MONTHS TO 3 YEARS)- AUTONOMY VS. SHAME AND DOUBT (PARENTS)
*LATE CHILDHOOD (3-5 YEARS)- INITIATIVE VS. GUILT (WHOLE FAMILY AND SCHOOL)
* SCHOOL AGE (6-12 YEARS)- INDUSTRY VS. INFERIORITY (PARENTS, NEIGHBOR AND SCHOOL)
* ADOLESCENCE (12-20 YEARS)- IDENTITY VS. ROLE CONFUSION (SCHOOL, PEERS AND ROLE MODELS)
*EARLY ADULTHOOD (20- 25 YEARS)- INTIMACY VS. ISOLATION (FRIENDS AND PARTNERS)
* ADULTHOOD (25-65 YEARS)- GENERATIVITY VS. STAGNATION (PEOPLE AT HOME AND AT WORK)
* MATURITY (65 YEARS OLD TO DEATH)- INTEGRITY VS. DESPAIR (PEOPLE AT HOME AND IN THE
COMMUNITY).
19. IDENTITY- THE CONCEPT OF AN INDIVIDUAL ABOUT HIMSELF OR HERSELF (SELF-IDENTITY) THAT IS
INFLUENCED AND MOLDED BY THEIR EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT. ROLES OFTENTIMES FORM THIS.
20. ROLE CONFUSION- THE NEGATION OR DENIAL OF SELF-IDENTITY. AFFECTS RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS.
21. DURING ADOLESCENCE, PHYSIOLOGICAL CHANGES ARE VERY PRONOUNCED, PUBERTY IS FELT
STRONGLY, BELIEFS START TO EVOLVE MORE SIGNIFICANTLY, IDEALISM IS SO FELT (MAY LEAD TO
BEING SELF-CONSCIOUS AND EGOCENTRIC), AND EXPERIMENTATION COMES IN THE SEARCH OF IDENTITY.
22. THERE ARE CERTAIN DEVELOPMENTAL TASKS AND SKILLS ADOLESCENTS HAVE TO LEARN IN
PREPARATION
TO NEXT STAGES OF LIFE. THESE INCLUDE:
 DEVELOPING OCCUPATIONAL SKILLS
 SELF-RELIANCE
 ABILITY TO MANAGE FINANCES
 SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
 MATURE WORK ORIENTATION
 PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY
 POSITIVE ATTITUDE TOWARD WORK
23. JOHARI WINDOW IS A PSYCHOLOGICAL TOOL CREATED BY JOSEPH LUFT AND HARRY INGRAM. THIS IS A
TOOL THAT HOPES TO KNOW THE SELF AND IN THE PROCESS, IMPROVE HIS OR HER RELATIONSHIP WITH
OTHERS. THAT IS WHY IT CAN BE TOLD THAT THE ESSENCE OF THIS TOOL IS TO LEAD ONE TO SELF-
KNOWLEDGE AND SELF-DISCOVERY. THE TOOL IS OF X-AXIS THAT CONSTITUTES WHAT WE KNOW
AND DO NOT KNOW ABOUT OURSELVES AND THE Y-AXIS WHICH CONSTITUTES
WHAT OTHERS KNOW AND DO NOT KNOW ABOUT US . THE CHALLENGE OF THIS TOOL THEN IS TO
EXPAND THE FIRST WINDOW. THE WINDOWS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

UNKNOWN SPOT- THINGS NEITHER WE NOR OTHERS KNOW ABOUT US
24. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT, AS A PROCESS, ENTAILS REFLECTING UPON YOURSELF, UNDERSTANDING WHO YOU ARE,
ACCEPTING WHAT YOU DISCOVER ABOUT YOURSELF, INVOLVING ONESELF WITH LEARNING, RE-LEARNING, & UNLEARNING
THINGS AS THE CASE MAY BE, EMBRACING NEW SET OF VALUES, ATTITUDES, BEHAVIOR, AND EVEN THINKING SKILLS THAT MAY PROVE
