Perimeter
• The distance around the outside edges of
any flat shape is called the perimeter of
the object.
• Think of perimeter as a one dimensional
quantity.
• The units of perimeter is length.
• Examples are inches, feet, meters, miles,
centimeters, yards, etc.
Area
• Area is the amount of surface inside a flat
shape.
• Think of area as a two dimensional
quantity.
• The units of area are square length.
• Examples are sq. ft., sq. in., sq. mi. sq m.
• OR ft2, in2, mi2
Perimeter of a Rectangle
• The perimeter is the distance around
a figure.
• The formulas are:
P = 2L + 2W
15 in.
P = 2 (L + W)
• Measured in single
8 in.
units.
9 in.
A=LxW
A = 14 in. x 9 in.
14 in.
A = 126 square in.
Area of a Square
• The number of square units needed
to cover the surface of a figure.
• The formula is: A = s² or A = s x s
• Area is measured in square units.
A = s² A=sxs
A = 6 in.² A = 6 in. x 6 in.
6 in. A = 36 sq. in.A = 36 sq. in.
Area of a Triangle
• The number of square units needed
to cover the surface of a figure.
• The formula is: A =½bh or A = bh
2
• Area is measured in square units.
A =½bh
5 in. 5 in.
A = ½(5 in.
4 in. x 4 in.)
A = ½ (20
5 in. sq. in.)
Volume
• The volume is the amount of space
occupied by a three-dimensional
object.
• The formula is V = L x W x H
• Volume is measured in cubic units.
5 in. V=LxWxH
V = 5 in. x 2 in. x 5 in.
2 in. V = 10 sq. in. x 5 in.
5 in.
V = 50 cubic in.
