Introduction of Biofertilizers
• The name itself is self explanatory. The fertilizers are used to improve the fertility
of the land using biological wastes, hence the term biofertilizers, and biological
wastes do not contain any chemicals.

• They are extremely beneficial in enriching the soil with those micro-organisms,
which produce organic nutrients for the soil and help combat diseases.

• biofertilizer does not contain traces of hazardous and poisonous materials. That’s
why, it is environment friendly.
PRODUCTION
Currently, there are about 114 producers of organic inputs and bio-fertilizers
with an installed capacity of 18,500 tones.

According to estimates of the National Bio-fertilizer Development Center

(NBDC) and the Bio-Tech Consortium of India Ltd (BCIL) about 344,800 tones of
bio-fertilizers are required for Indian agriculture.

The utility of bio-fertilizers has been validated by reputed agencies in India

(such as NBDC and ICRISAT) and abroad.
DISTRIBUTION
• In 1944, the Government of India established the “Central Fertilizer Pool” as the
official agency for the distribution of all available fertilizers at fair prices
throughout the country.
• All fertilizers, whether domestically produced or imported, were pooled together
and distributed through state agencies.
• In 1966, manufacturers were allowed to market 50 percent of their production.
• But this was short-lived and due to Fertilizer shortages in the early 1970s led the
Government to pass the Fertilizer Movement Control Order in 1973, which brought
the distribution of fertilizers under government control.

FUTURE PROSPECTS

• India's foodgrain requirement to feed the estimated population of 1 400 million by

2025 will be 300 million tonnes.

• The country will require about 45 million tonne of nutrients (30 million tonnes for
foodgrains and 15 million tonnes of nutrients for other crops) from various sources
of plant nutrients, i.e. fertilizers, organic manures and biofertilizers.
CONCLUSION
• Bio-fertilizers, as a product category, need to create an identity that is distinct from
organic fertilizers. Bio-fertilizer manufacturers need to make the product simpler to
use, to increase its adoption.

• Currently, there are small and medium enterprises producing bio-fertilizers. They
do not have adequate resources for extension activities.

• There is a case for large-scale enterprises to enter manufacturing of bio-fertilizers,

which would lead to economies of scale and make available resources for extension
activities. This would solve the problem of availability, awareness and quality.
