HOW MEDIA PLAYS A ROLE IN
DEMOCRACY?
• Media plays a vital role in a democracy by providing news and
debates.
• It provides information that citizens can use for understanding the
working of a government.
• The government uses the media to know the opinion of the people.
• This is done through letters to ministers, public protest or asking
the government to rethink the programme.
• For this, media should be independent.
How media get money?
They get money through:

1 • Press censorship by the


government.

2 • Involvement of big business


houses.

3 • The need to cover that will


interest the people.
Why media has to set
agendas?
 Media plays an important role in deciding what is worth of
being reported.
 The media has reported about cold drinks being unsafe as
they contained pesticides.
 The media played a positive role in drawing people’s
attention.
 The media, at times neglect vital issues.
 When fashion week was going on in Mumbai, slums were also
being demolished.
 The media covered the fashion week but the demolition was
neglected by it.
