Experiment Name:

Determination of fabric crease

recovery by Shirley Crease
Recovery Tester.
The ability of the fabric to prevent the formation of wrinkles or creases on the
surface of the fabric during various uses or process is called crease resistance of
the fabric”. The crease resistance of the fabric is expressed in the term of crease
recovery angle.
Introduction:
Crease is a fold in fabric introduced unintentionally at some stages of processing. Crease or
crushing of textile material is a complex effect involving tensile, compressive, flexing and
torsional stresses. Crease recovery is a fabric property which indicates the ability of fabric to go
back to its original position after creasing.
Theory:
Crease recovery is a measure of creases resistance, specified quantitatively in terms of crease
recovery angle. To measure this, the popular instrument is Shirley crease recovery tester. The
instrument consists of a circular dial which carries the clamp for holding the specimen. Directly
under the center of the dial there is a knife edge and an index line for measuring the recovery
angle. Crease recovery is determined depending upon this recovery angle. If the angle is 0o then
recovery is zero and if the angle is 180o then recovery is full. Crease recovery depends on the
construction, twist of yarn, pressure, time etc. Usually crease recovery is more in warp way than in
weft way. This is because warp yarns are well in quality, strength, treated with sizing, kept in more
tension during weaving etc.
Objective:
To measure the crease recovery of the given fabric.
To know about the crease of a fabric
To know about the crease recovery of a fabric.
To know how to find out the crease recovery of a fabric.
To know about the mechanism of seam crease machine

Atmosphere Condition:
Standard atmosphere condition: R.H% = (65±2) %
Lab Atmosphere condition: R.H% = 67.68%
Temperature = 26° C
Formula:

Crease recovery = × 100

Where,

α = crease recovery angle (degree)

Apparatus:
 Seam crease machine
 Template (40×15)mm2
 Pencil & knife
 Stop watch
Machine component:
 Dial
 Clip
 Angle, clemergation line
 Load
 Load clip
 Metal strip
PREPARATION OF SPECIMENS:

The test specimens are prepared in both directions ( warp way and weft way)
separately. 10 specimens from each direction are prepared. The specimens are
measured with the help of measuring scale and then cut by scissor. The warp and
weft directions are identified carefully with the help of magnifying glass before
preparing the specimens. The specimen size is kept 15 mm.  X 40 mm. A technician
can also use marking template to prepare the test specimens. You can see below
picture also:

TESTING PROCEDURE:

1 - The warp way and weft way specimens are placed separately. First of all, 5 warp way specimens
are folded in the middle of the length. These 5 specimens are folded face to face of the fabric. Now
other 5 remaining warp way specimens are folded back to back. These specimens are also folded in
the middle of the length of the specimens.

2 - Above process is repeated for weft way specimens also.

3  -Now start the testing of specimens of warp way specimens one by one.

4 - The folded specimen is placed between base plate and pressing plate.

5 - A loading plate of 2 kgs is placed over pressing plate. Now the technician brings
the pressing plate downward by revolving the eccentric disc in releasing position. This
is the time when, the stop wach us started at the same time. The load from the
specimen is released after 5 minutes by revolving the eccentric at pressure releasing
position. The specimen is taken out of the plates.

6 - Now this pressed specimen is placed between the clamping specimen as shown in
the diagram. The specimen has been shown in red colour.

7 -  Asthe technician place the one leaf of specimen between clamp, he releases the specimen from his hand. At the
same time, he start the stop watch again. The recovery of the creasing angle takes place during relaxation period. The
technician keeps his eye continuously over the relaxation process. The hanging leaf of specimen should always be in
vertical position. As the position of hanging leaf of specimen goes out of vertical position, the technician requires to
adjust it's position by rotating graduated disc manually. The reading of crease recovery angle is recorded after five
minutes from releasing of the specimen from hand. This process is repeated for all remaining warp way specimens. The
result of the test is expressed in angle degree.

8 - The recovery angle is measured by graduated disc fitted in the instrument.

9 - The same process gets repeated for weft way specimens.

10 - Five nearest reading of warp way specimens are selected among all warp way specimen and mean of these selected
readings is calculated.

11 - The above method is repeated in the calculation of weft way crease recovery angle too..

Working procedure:
 At first a fabric was cut from the sample on the measurement of template 50, the
sample size was (40×15) mm2
 Then, the sample was used for warp crease recovery, the sample was dipped into
the metal sheet & then the load of 500gm was given on the folded fabric.
 These loads were kept at least 5 min on the fabric & the recovery time was at least
1 min.
 Then, the fabric was feed in the machine & was calculated the crease recovery
angle & by the use of formula the crease recovery was evaluated.
Data Table:

SL Warp crease recovery angle (α) Crease recovery warp Mean % Weft crease recovery angle (α) Crease recovery weft Mean %

01 85 47.2 130 72.22

02 84 46.66 133 73.88

46.1 73.44
03 81 45 131 72.77

04 83 46.11 132 73.33

05 82 45.55 135 75

Calculation:
For warp direction,
Observation-1
Crease recovery angle α = 85°

∴ crease recovery % = × 100

= × 100
= 47.2
  weft direction,
For
Observation- 1
Crease recovery angle α = 130°
∴ crease recovery % = × 100
= × 100
= 72.22
Result:
Warp crease recovery 46.1%
Weft crease recovery 73.44%
Precaution:
 Measured the fabric very carefully.
 Machine used carefully.
 All the angel taken sharply.
 Used proper weight.
Comments:
If the crease recovery angle is 0° then the recovery is zero & if the angle is 180° the
recovery is full. Here, the warp recovery % is 46.1 & weft recovery % is 73.44 of the
supplied fabric. So, it is to say that the crease recovery of the sample fabric is average.
