What is Statistics?

 Statisticsis the discipline that concerns the

collections, organization, analysis, interpretation
and presentation data.
A bit of history about
statistic
▪ The History of statistics can be said to
start around 1749 although
▪ The modern field of statistics only
emerged in the late 19th and early 20th
century in three stages.
▪ Karl Pearson, the founder of mathematical

Customer data
Effective collection and mining of statistical data can yield valuable
insight for companies about the likes, dislikes and buying habits of
their customers.

Performance Boost
Statistics not only help measure business performance, but can also
provide a means for boosting it. Some firms even use data and
statistics to experiment with ways to improve management decisions,

No. of new diseases grown in last 10 year.
Increase in no. of patients for a particular
disease.
Sports
It Used to compare run rates of to different
teams. It Used to compare to different
players.
Character of Statistics
 Statistics are aggregates of facts

 Statistics are numerically expressed

 Statistics are affected to a marked extent by multiplicity of causes

 Reasonable standards of accuracy in enumeration,

estimation or collection

 Statistics are collected in a systematic manner

 Statistics are collected for predetermined purpose

Importance of statistics

 Useful to bankers
 Useful to insurance company
 Useful to railways and other
transport agencies
 Useful to business
 Useful to economists
 Useful to planning
Limitation of Statistic
 Statistics laws are true on average. Statistics are
aggregates of facts, so a single observation is not a
statistic. Statistics deal with groups and aggregates only.
 Statistical methods are best applicable to quantitative
data.
 Statistics cannot be applied to heterogeneous data.
 If sufficient care is not exercised in collecting, analyzing
and interpreting the data, statistical results might be
misleading.
 Only a person who has an expert knowledge of statistics
can handle statistical data efficiently.
 Some errors are possible in statistical decisions. In
particular, inferential statistics involves certain errors.
We do not know whether an error has been committed or
Conclusion

 Sometimes a computer science student says why I need

statistics.
 But at the end of the day while playing with data
someone need to comes into a conclusion with a
decision ,there a summery is very important.
 So there are no chance without statistics for a better
analysis.
