Common Competencies
Use of Hand Tools
Proper Tool Selection

A tool is a handheld device that aids in

accomplishing a task.
Safe Use of Tools

Environmental Safety and Health Program

requires the following:

 All tools be kept in good condition with regular

maintenance
 The right tool be used for the job
 Each tool be examined before use AND damaged
or defective tools NOT to be used
 Tools be operated according to manufacturer’s
instructions
Hardware Tools

Hardware tools are grouped into these four

categories:

1. Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) tools

2. Hand tools
3. Cleaning tools
4. Diagnostic tools
Electro-Static Discharge (ESD)

 ESD is a fast, silent, invisible killer of PC

components.
 Static electricity is easily generated by
friction on carpets, tile flooring, clothing, hair,
fabric, and etc.
Examples of ESD Tools

1. Anti-static wrist strap - ESD wrist strap, or

ground bracelet is an antistatic device used
to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) by
safely grounding a person working on
electronic equipment.
Examples of ESD Tools

2. Anti-static mat - used to stand on or place

hardware on to prevent static electricity
from building up.
Hand Tools

A hand tool is a device for performing work

on a material or a physical system using only
hands. The hand tools can be manually used
employing force, or electrically powered,
using electrical current.
Examples of Hand Tools

 Philips head screwdriver - used to loosen or

tighten crosshead screws.
Examples of Hand Tools

 Flat head screwdriver - used to loosen or

tighten slotted screws.
Examples of Hand Tools

 Torxscrewdriver - used to
loosen or tighten screws
that have a star-like
depression on the top, a
feature that is mainly
found on laptop.
Examples of Hand Tools

 Hex driver – sometimes called a nut driver, is

used to tighten nuts in the same way that a
screwdriver tightens screws.
Examples of Hand Tools
 Precision Screwdriver - Used
primarily for work on small,
intricate devices, a precision
screwdriver is a hand tool with
a similar intended use as a
standard screwdriver but
possessing a smaller form
factor and a sleeker handle
design.
Examples of Hand Tools

Needle-Nose Pliers
 Useful for grabbing screws dropped inside a
computer.
 A fine-pointed pliers is the perfect tool for
straightening bent pins inside
Examples of Hand Tools

 Wire cutter - used to strip and cut wires.

Examples of Hand Tools

Tweezers
 used to manipulate small
parts.
 retrieving that lost screw
inside of a computer case.
 removing any jumpers from
motherboards and drives.
Examples of Hand Tools

 Partretriever - This little

gem is designed to pick
up and hold small parts
such as screws so that
they can be inserted into
and removed from tight
places.
Examples of Hand Tools

 Flashlight - used to light up areas that you

cannot see well.
Examples of Hand Tools

 Crimping Tool - This tool is used to crimp on

the RJ-11 modular telephone connectors on
ribbon cable.
Examples of Hand Tools

 Wire strippers - A tool designed to remove

the protective covering (jacket) off of a cable
to expose the inner wires.
Examples of Hand Tools

 Wire strippers - is a small, hand-held device

used to strip the electrical insulation from
electric wires.
Examples of Hand Tools

 Soldering iron - is
a hand tool used
in soldering. It supplies
heat to melt solder so
that it can flow into the
joint between two
workpieces.
Examples of Hand Tools

 In electronics, desoldering is
the removal of solder and
components from a circuit
board for troubleshooting,
repair, replacement, and
salvage.
Examples of Hand Tools

 Drill Stand Kit - Ensures precision work with

all types of drills of any brand. Triple metal
guide for high accuracy. Can be used
horizontally and vertically. 2 G-clamps fixings.
Essential for precision drilling, ideal when
drilling depth with stop.

Examples of Hand Tools

 Magnifying glass - a
device made in glass with
handle, to exaggerate or
to increase the apparent
size of an object.
 L-Square
 Bow Saw
Cleaning Tools

 Having the appropriate cleaning tools is

essential when maintaining or repairing
computers.
 Using these tools ensures that computer
components are not damaged during
cleaning.
Examples of Cleaning Tools

 Lint-freecloth - used to clean different

computer components without scratching or
leaving debris.
Paint Brush

a device made of bristles set in handle, use

for cleaning sensitive parts of a computer.
Examples of Cleaning Tools

 Compressed air - used to blow away dust

and debris from different computer parts
without touching the components.
Examples of Cleaning Tools

 Cable ties - used to bundle cables neatly

inside and outside of a computer.
Examples of Cleaning Tools

 Parts organizer - used to

hold screw, jumpers,
fasteners and other
small parts and prevents
them from getting
mixed together.
Diagnostic Tools

 Computers are easier to use and more

dependable with each new generation of
hardware and operating system update, but
that doesn't mean they're problem-free.
Examples of Diagnostic Tools

 Multimeter - used to test the integrity of

circuits and the quality of electricity in
computer components.
Examples of Diagnostic Tools

 LAN TESTER - A cable tester is an electronic

device used to verify the electrical
connections in a cable or other wired
assembly.
